hey guys,

I got my impeller fixed and took boat out today. I noticed when i was out last that my impeller was not pushing water throught motor and that my engine seemed be surging. I figured it was due to it getting hot last time out but today i was able to determine that the coil for piston one isnt getting any power when engine is running. I traced the wie that feeds coil back to cdi and found no breaks or issue with the wire. could my cdi be bad or maybe my trigger?

Helps if we know what were working on??
Year,make, model, serial#s a pic?
Outboard ignition . com or CDI ignition both have test procedures for the ignition on most motors.

im sorry, too much sun! its a 1987 force 125 on a 1987 20' bayliner capri. i was reading archives for awhile last night and it seems that you can have one side of the cdi go bad but at $250 a unit i want to be sure before i buy one. any help would be great

Now I can help a bit more.
Swap the leads around and see if the spark follows the coil or the pack?
There are a lot of used packs on e-bay.
I had trouble with the leads on one of my motors and ended up changing ALL the wire connectors.
Turns out the trigger leads LOOKED good but were actually broken under the shrinkwrap.
I replaced all the connectors and fixed my problem.
The Outboard ignition . com or CDI ignition both have test procedures for the ignition on most motors.
These 2 places have test procedures try them.

wow jerry thats an great wedsite!! i printed out the test and will be doing it saturday. i checked my leads by pulling on them while they were still screwed in to the board. they all seemed tight in the crimp connection, i will check again. On the ignition site you gave me they mention that if your going to replace one cdi you should replace both or your new one might burn the other out. what do you think about that, is that true?

If they suggest it it's possible??? That's the first I have heard of that. Maybe someone else has.
I also heard that you aint supposed to mix the blue and black units.Again I never had a problem.
Like I said there are a lot of them on e-bay buy a pair of the same color.
The blue are the original equipment the black was made later.
And I pulled on the leads and still had a problem.Only went away when I replaced the connectors.

ok so i tested my triggers resistance and went through all of the connections. All of that checked out so i switched out my cdi's and the problem went from piston one not firing to now piston three not firing. im assuming at this point it has to be tge cdi thats gone bad
