Fixing Speedometer

Hello-
I know there are some threads regarding this subject, however I have a specific question. I have an Alpha 1 Stern drive so I have the little inlet hole on the leading edge. The first time it stopped working, I know something must have been clogging hole. But it worked it's way out as I was running up and down the river. Well, it happened again as I must have hit some wood, because I did see some small wood particles in/around inlet.

Using help here, I grabbed a small drill bit and by hand tried to slide the mini pieces out, but of course I ended up pushing them through. Although I am sure there was/is more crap in there than I could see. So the speedo still isn't registering. Any thoughts on next steps would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Fixing Speedometer

You're going to end up clogging the tube. Disconnect the tubing from the speedometer. Then get an air compressor or can of compressed air(common computer accessory) and spray into the tubing from the gauge. Whatever gets lodged in must be removed downward, rather than upward towards the gauge.

Tilt the drive all the way up; up above anti-cav plate on the forward part of the drive you'll see where the speedo tube hooks to the drive. Pull it off (will be a plastic clip holding it, so don't manhandle it), pour a little water in the hole then hit it with compressed air. That'll usually clean it out.

Re: Fixing Speedometer

This is an easy fix, toss the factory speedo in the garbage(its not accurate anyway)and replace it with a gps speedo.
