Fixing to tear into a Stringer that quit goin on the lake.

My buddy has an 1985 Sea Ray with a 350 and a 800 Stringer I think, he was goin across the lake and it come outta gear, the motor was and still does run he just lost propulsion. The prop is good, and I haven't tore it apart yet, what should I check first. I've rebuilt my Cobra with the help on here and I'm sure I can do this one too with a little guidance from the experts on here, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm gonna drop the out drive in the mornin, I checked the shifter cable awhile ago and they seem to be rolling across the top of the motor shifter without binding up so I'm thinking it's in the bottom. Send your opinions, and I'll go from here. Thanks in advance. I'll keep you posted with progress, or failures...lol...
