Flame Arrestor Question

Just cleaned my flame arrestor on a 1997 Mercruiser 4.3L. If I look from the outside in, should I be able to see light through the small openings in the element? If so, it's no where near clean.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe if you put a flashlight inside the arrestor you'll see light coming out but looking in from the outside, light always seemed to be difficult to see.

Had you have access to one, one of the better ways to clean the metal design is to use automotive solvent tank with a parts cleaning brush such as these, http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=...18&sp=2&sk=AS1

Thanks Fun Times,

I was able to shine some light through and saw there was still crud between the wafers.

I pop them in the dishwasher.

I once made the mistake of putting my exhaust manifolds (from my 56) in the oven to bake on the finish. The missus was not happy. I cannot imagine what she would say if I put my flame arrester in the dishwasher!

You have to do it when they're out...

At least the dishwasher won't ignite that way.....

I had to buy my wife a new stove after I used it to bake some parts I had powder coated. She claimed everything smelled & tasted like that "crap that I put in there". Now I've got a nice oven in my shop to use for various tasks.

I'll have to remember that about the dishwasher, might be less work than the parts cleaner. Ha.

hum, what if ya don't have a dishwasher? like me. though i'd bet there aren't to many folks these days w/o a elec. dishwasher.

anyways. i've been cleaning my fa w/o a dishwaher for years.
break kleen followed by compressed air.... it always makes short work for cleaning the fa. it's so fast i clean my fa multipule times a season.... i know the leo's like to bust folks for dirty fa's... + it's a good thing to do having a clean fa... just makes sense to give yer engine as much fresh, clean air as possible...
