Fleetwin 7.5 D/S casing to cylinder gasket

Hi.

new here.

I'm rebuilding the L/U on my mid-50's Fleetwin. I order a seal kit and new impeller and plate for the pump. When I took the powerhead off, I noticed that the gasket is in really poor shape (it's been re-used once too many times, I think.) My local dealer couldn't find a replacement for this. I was wondering if I could cut a new one from exhaust gasket material (i.e. carbon gasket) from an auto parts store, or is this some kind of exotic material? Also, the rubber washer at the top of the D/S oil seal could use a change - any thoughts on what to use? I suppose the local shop should have something compatible?

Welcome to Iboats.
Probably best if you could post a model number to determine the exact year of your Fleetwin, since there was a change in the design to the power head gasket. The model number is a 4 digit number that would be on a tag riveted to the transom clamp. If the tag is missing, post a picture of your motor, and one of the guys here should be able to identify the year.

You can cut your own gasket out of regular gasket material, but IMHO it's much easier to use a factory/aftermarket gasket, and you're less likely to run into a sealing issue.

Despite your dealer striking out finding the parts you need, a good majority of the parts for these motors, especially the gaskets are still available from both BRP, and the aftermarket.

Not sure which rubber washer on to of the drive shaft you're talking about. Would you be able to post a picture of it?

FYI if we can assign a correct year to your motor, you can look up parts for Evinrude motors '55 and newer here;

There are two different powerhead gaskets used in the 7.5hp. Both should be available.

Not sure which rubber washer on to of the drive shaft you're talking about. Would you be able to post a picture of it?

It's the D/S to crankcase gasket or the lower bearing seal to D/S O-ring - not sure right now and not at home. I will post model number (and probably figure out year based on secret file lookup table) and picture of part in question. Hope to do this later today.

The carbon seal assembly is critical to the preservation of that powerhead. It should be thoroughally examined whenever you pull the powerhead and replace as needed. Dont forget to regrease the splines as well. All this together keeps water out of the powerhead.

Thanks for the advice. Can I just replace the whole carbon seal assembly (i.e. o-ring, carbon seal, bushing)? Is that even available? The spring and follower look ok. As for grease, I tend to use a lot of automotive bearing grease - but I guess given the high temp application, I should opt for something else? Lithium?

Okay. I checked. Model is 7516 (i.e. 1954). Can I still get a powerhead gasket for this? As for the carbon seal, can I get replacement parts for this? the upper carbon washer that sits on top of the brass bushing looks a bit long in the tooth. The black (carbon?) bushing below the brass one looks ok. Thoughts?

Im on my laptop right now and cannot remember the part numbers off hand, but they are all easily had. Im not sure if iboats carries them or not, but marineengine.com will have them, as will your local dealer, or select online sources.

Thanks. I think it might be a bit harder. Everything is 1955 and on as far as parts goes (or so it seems). I'm guessing I could get away with parts for 7518 or 7519 for some parts. I think worst case I can cut the powerhead gasket and use an RTV type sealant to ensure a good seal, but I'm more worried about the oil seal.

I just gave you all the part numbers. The powerhead gasket is 303467. The 303355 gasket on top of the brass washer is cork, not carbon. The 303347 o-ring goes inside the carbon seal, below the brass washer.

BTW, the brass washer was replaced by a stainless steel one because the brass wore out too soon. Check yours for wear. It won't do any good if badly worn.

Frank, do you have the following page of that parts manual? (or is it available online). I just may want to get some extra parts from the L/U (thrust bearing, prop axle bearings, drain screw washers, etc.) depending on how worn they are. I haven't taken the L/U apart yet, so I'm not sure what condition everything is in there.

I am going through this process on the same motor for for the first time myself. When is mentioned to lube the spline, impeller and power head base gasket, what specific type of lubrication should I be using? So I shouldn’t use a sealant like RTV on the power head? Thanks in advance, Mark
