So I got the Sierra #18-7043 Carb kit for my 7.5 hp Rude.Im taking my time an paying great attention to every piece for future knowledge.Upon changing the float valve and seat I notice that the little needle valve supplied in rebuild kit differs from the one in my carb..(Not sure if its original since this is my first project motor)..The one from my carb looks like a piece of .125" keystock with a small diameter .1085" tapered to a point....The valve supplied in kit is .125" keystock w/ approx a. 050" thick head then a. 063"dia back to. 125" square to opposite end where it goes to a. 1245" dia but instead of a tapered steel point, its a black rubber/plastic point tip...The old one (all steel) is.... .581" long where as the new one is .5485" long and also has a blunt tip on it where the old one has a sharp tip... What's up with tree different styles?Did I get the wrong kit or is this normal?
Thanks,
Kurt:confused:

It's probably normal. Looks like the Sierra needle has a rubber tip. The carb kit I bought for my Bigtwin had the same float needle. It worked just fine.

Ok thanks Bonair, I wasn't sure so I called it a nite. This is my first attempt at a rebuild and I really don't wanna have to take it back apart because I didn't wanna take the time to ask!
Thanks again!

You should also have a little clip which attaches to the needle and feeds over the float arm. That MUST be installed with the rubber-tipped needle to keep it from sticking shut.

I agree. All of the Sierra kits I've ever gotten had the same rubber tipped piece. Is suppose you could always reuse the old one if you're worried, but it shouldn't make much of a difference either way. Just be sure it's properly seated and doesn't get hung up while moving up and down. These links may help too.

You really want to use the new one with the clip. It stops sticking valves. The old ones stick. btw, I have the parts manual for that engine if you want it. If yes, PM me with the model and your email address.
