I was on an unfamiliar lake the other day and hit a stump just under the waterline. It caused me to do a barrel roll and ejected all four on board.

At the time I was just happy to make it to shore with everyone alive and safe, but now I need to deal with the damage.

It has a 1987 Mercury 25 2Stroke that was running at high throttle when it went upside down and sucked in water. The rope pull is very diificult. I pulled the spark plugs and emptied the water from the cylinders. I sprayed some WD40 in the cylinders to prevent rust and gave it fresh fuel. I'm going to take it to a shop soon, any ideas what I'm going to hear? Do you think the motor is wasted?

Again, the only symptom at this point is the rope pull is very difficult.

Thanks!

If you can't get it to start, don't let it set the brgs will rust quickly. it would be better under water than setting with water in it

you need to drain the carbs and get fresh gas in there .with the plugs out get some 2 stroke oil in the cylinders crank over with plugs out.
put new plugs in it fresh tank of gas.
Chk for spark at plugs.
Crank it .
If it turns over hard with the plugs out you may have bent a connecting rod with hydrolock.

Rich

You might want to drop the lower unit and see if you can turn the flywheel. If you can turn the flywheel (plugs out), you'll at least have a head start on finding the problem. If the flywheel is still hard to turn, opening the powerhead is you're only option.

Wellcraft has it pegged. If the engine went for a dive while running WOT, water sucked into the engine very likely caused it to lock up suddenly and the result is bent rods and possibly the crankshaft. Pistons could also be deformed to the extent that they are dragging excessively.

Geez, I get the willies every time I read this post. I don't have any mechanical advice to offer but I'm sure glad you and your passengers are OK. Man...that must have been some ride. I can't begin to imagine how that felt.

Nikko
