Float Needle Clip

Hi, I have a 1981 Evinrude 25hp and I cleaned the carb when I first got it and now the engine runs after I prime it and then cuts off. If I fill the bowl again with the ball it will run until it drains the bowl. I was told I am probably missing a clip that keeps the needle attached to the float arm so I ordered the one on the parts list for this motor and have no idea how to install it. There is no groove on the needle, do I need this clip?

You do need the clip.

Sounds like you may have one of the following:
-bad fuel pump
-air leak in the fuel supply line
-plugged vent
-partially plugged filter

actually the clip is not necessary, they are new item in carbs. there should be enough pressure to push the needle down. prime the motor with the bulb. disconnect fuel line at carb. now turn the motor over, you should get strong fuel pulses out of the fuel line. if not look at the fuel pump, etc.

I think the clip was designed for the newer "rubber" tipped needles, the idea being that the rubber would stick without it and shut off fuel flow. The rubber tipped needles should have the groove at the base for the clip. The old needles don't need the clip and don't have the groove.

lindy has it right. When they first came out with the soft tip needles, they stuck frequently. I was there when it was happening. Adding the clip to drag it off the seat fixed the problem. So, if you have a soft tip needle without a groove, it must be a very old one that somebody has installed in there. The clip type has been used for about 30 years. OR, if it is not a soft-tipped needle, it doesn't need a clip.

The idea was, as the float fell, it would pull the needle down with it. Assuring the valve was open. The engine will most certainly run with out that clip. There is not enough room for the needle to fall out of it's seat. It would be possible for the needle to stick closed. More possible with ageing.

The kits with the clip have been around since the mid-seventies as F_R notes. They came with the needle, seat and clip as a set. OEM Part # 0678882.

The needle with the clip has been a standard part of all 9.9HP & 15HP OMC motors since 1979 and will be shown in every parts catalog. It would be foolish not to use it considering the trouble that can be caused by not using it compared to the low cost; even the old solid metal needles stuck if the premix gummed up.
