It's a Walbro LMB 229 618061 on a '84 Sea King/Chrysler 15. The carb did not have this spring when I took it apart but the needle/seat kit has one. The pic on marine engine shows it. Does it definitely have to be installed ?

Not necessarily. If you didn't have one on it when you disassembled it, and it was running well up to that point, why would you need it. I don't know how hard it is to remove and disassembly the carb later if you leave it out and try it. But I would assembly the carb like it was originally unless there were problems with how it ran. That spring was problem installed to make sure the needle didn't stick when the float was low allowing fuel in. But that is just my opinion. JMHO

It ran ok except for full throttle. The ignition is good with new points and condensers;inline spark tester shows strong spark at all settings. The fp has been rebuilt. I suspected the viton seat may be at fault because the rest of the carb seemed fine. I've posted about this before and how I damaged the cast-in seat bore. I'd also been looking for another carb. Thanks for the reply.

If you do a search for your carb, there are lots of replacement parts to include the needle and seat assembly. So if you need to rebuilt it with a new seat setup, just search for that carb number and have a look.

This one has a built-in seat bore as part of the casting with a viton seat insert and a retaining spring clip that snaps into a groove above the seat. I wish it had a removable seat like so many carbs have. I'll try to find another if I can't fix this one.

If you can't repair yours, you could basically buy any Walbro LMB new or used carburetor and use the body with your other parts. Walbro made literally millions of carbs in so many configurations that you shouldn't have too much problems finding something that would work.

And if worst comes to worst, you could buy a new needle and set configuration for a more modern design and drill yours out carefully and insert the entire setup in yours. It really isn't that difficult.

One other things you can try, take some fine valve grinding compound and a few cotton swabs and rotate them around to polish the seat area. I've actually done that on one carb and work very well. I used a Dremel tool and cut the cotton swabs in half and used polishing compounds to clean and redress the seat. It came out like a mirror and no leaks either. Just an idea.
