I was under the impression a "Float Plan" (when & where you plan to navigate) is voluntary in coastal and tidal waters.

From the memmory of my boating course I knew float plans are required in many shipping channels and within specific proximity of military ports.

However, I was in a discussion with someone who insisted a Float Plan is mandatory on some coastal waterways.

Can some of the seasoned mariners offer helpful info?

Re: Float Plan Question

File one whenever possible. The ABA has a downloadable plan on their site.

Re: Float Plan Question

the only time I know that a "float" plan is nessasary is for shipping traffic in restricted manuvering areas, for the average boater under 100 feet or so I dont think it applies. however its a good idea to file or at least leave one and then stick to it. it has been known to save lives.
the capt in the ro ro or the oil tanker cant just decide to enter or exit a port. there has to be a plan on file I just cant remember the name of it.

Re: Float Plan Question

I agree with rodbolt, not necessary for your average boater, but GREAT idea to file one with relatives/friends in case of an emergency.
