Floating Dock or Pontoon Boat?

I have a unique set of requirements. I have a cottage on a small private island out in a bay a couple hundred feet. Not far, but far enough to make things challenging. The water flows thru there, as it is on a river delta so the ice is sometimes there and sometimes melts very quickly throughout the winter. Due to the threat of ice, I can't leave my pontoon boat in.

I came up with this contraption. It is a floating dock in the summer, and in winter I can pull up a small area on the back and mount a small outboard. It doesn't need to be fast, just stable enough to not dump the wife. It had to be cheap enough that if it gets crushed in the ice, I don't care. I built it for about $150, but easily could replicate it for $200 worst case. The plans allowed me to cut EVERY board with no waste. In the end, I had zero left over. When I get a chance, I will try to lay out the plans, and post a picture with the motor on it. I bought the materials in the morning, cut them at home, hauled them an hour to the cottage, and had it floating by 5pm. It was cold, and just two of us, so I am sure I could do it again in 1/2 the time.

Materials list:
7) 2x6x12' ($7 each=$49)
13) 5/4x6x12' ($5 each=$65)
6) barrels from the local car wash ($7 each=$42)
55' of plumbers tape ($8)
5# of exterior 1 3/4" screws ($15)
2# of exterior 3" screws ($4)
handful of galvanized roofing nails to secure the plumbers tape

It is 6' x 12' and quite stable. The barrels keep it up high enough that it will rise as the ice freezes in around it.

good job.
You had me wondering what the heck you were using the plumbers tape for.
I was thinking teflon tape until I see it was the galvanized steel hanger strap (I think) used to hold the drums.
So what is the motor?
It looks like a swim platform.

Yes, it could be used as a swim platform as well. I have a '54 Johnson 7.5hp that should move it fine. I will also try the '54? Seaking (Gale) 5HP.

My normal dock at the island is in shallower water than the other end of the island, and in the winter the water levels drop about a foot or two, making it not possible to use. So I tie this up to the deep end of the island, and use it to get out of the jon boat easier. I have a steel seawall around the whole island, that is about 4' above the winter water level, so it is hard to get right from the jon boat to the island without the floating dock.

I also decided that I can use the 18" of left over 2x6 to make some cleats to support the removable panel, then the removable panel can have a finger hole to pull it up, and folding legs on the bottom to use as a seat when running the tiller. I'll post pictures when that is done.

The Sugar Shack in the picture is AWESOME!!

Thanks,

If you go though the site there is a video of him and his sons going down the Yukon river with the set up you are building. Very close at least.

Yes, here is the picture of the Black Pearl when I got it and now.

There is some question if it was actually home built, but it would have been done in the 50's. I aquired it from my wife's grandmother after her grandfather passed away. We know that he was at least the second owner, and no one seems to know where he got it. There are no identifying marks on it, but it mostly floats great. I use it as a barge to float building supplies to the island now. When I got it, the floor was crumbling so I re-decked it and keep it clear of rails and furniture to ease loading/unloading.

Re: Floating Dock or Pontoon Boat?

The Tortuga Queen works great. I did recently get the decking done in the rear. I recently used an old 3hp Sears engine and it moved it fairly well.

I will get the 5hp Sea King on it this weekend.

Here are the pics I promised earlier.
