Floating Docks vs Stationary Docks which do you like?

Since I have my wet slip I see why people tend to like floating docks. Today the tide was low at 4 pm. I would have had to jump down to get into my boat.

If you have some negatives on a floating dock share them.

when you have up to 26 ft tides such as we do up here, a floating dock with a ramp is the only possible way to go

The only answer to the question is "it depends."

Where I am, I prefer stationary so I don't have to worry about hurricanes.

floating docks are nice and convenient, and there really are no disadvantages other than what homecookin said.

fixed docks are better for large boats because they are generally more secure, and the height due to tide changes is not as big of a problem with large multilevel boats.

I don't like floating docks. Too much instability for my liking.

I was searching and found something interesting about floating docks. During hurricane Ike some boats moored to them correctly did not get damaged. They were able to rise in the storm surge.

during the northeasters (here, usually worse than hurricanes, and more frequent) boats moored to the floating docks did fine. The docks themselves, however, broke free and drifted off with the boats secured to them!

Floating docks have some nice advantages over stationary docks. But when it comes to docks on salt water, I think a permanent dock with a small floating platform is the best of both worlds.

I really hate walking on docks that move all over.

a boat. :D

I hate them too. Hate them even more if they make noise when the waves move them around.

Yeah, same thing happened around here (during Isabel). The surge lifted the docks above the pilings and whole sections drifted away.
Another bad thing about floating docks- after a couple years they squeak. For those of us who sleep onboard, that is VERY annoying.
I'm glad my marina has fixed docks. With our 2' tidal range it's not a big deal.

According to Websters Online Dictionary:

a wharf --- a structure built along or at an angle from the shore of navigable waters so that ships may lie alongside to receive and discharge cargo and passengers.

a dock --- a place for the loading or unloading of materials, usually wooden pier used as a landing place or moorage for boats.

a jetty --- a structure extended into a sea, lake, or river to influence the current or tide or to protect a harbor : a protecting frame of a pier.

a pier --- a structure (as a breakwater) extending into navigable water for use as a landing place or promenade or to protect or form a harbor.
