Anyone give me an idea where I can get a cool floating keychain for my new boat? :D

Select the correct size bobber in the fishing tackle section at Wally World. :D

Re: Floating Keychain

How about a childs life jacket? With all the keys that somehow have been collecting on the various floaters I have now, I need something a little more sturdy!

Re: Floating Keychain

Anyone rig something up which makes it easy to attach the drain plug to a floating keychain?

I take out my drain plug so infrequently (have a boathouse with lift) that if I ever do take it out I have a much higher chance of forgetting to put it back. It would be nice to have to handle it with the keys so I can't forget to put it back in before starting the boat.

Re: Floating Keychain

I purchased a floating keychain at Wally World that has a flashlight and waterproof compartment(its yellow and blue made by Attwood). I store the plug in the compartment, so whenever I grab the keys they are quite heavy to remind me to put the plug in. So far I haven't forgotten the plug.

Re: Floating Keychain

I have a large (2 1/2” long) safety pin on my key ring. It is great (for a bunch of things) to hook belt loop when the keys are out and when I pull the plug at home I use it to clip the plug onto the key ring.

:D :D
LOL. Guess I should of known better than to start up with you guys! At least everyone is getting a laugh. Thanks for the genius and crafty opinions on the matter. I shall try my darndest to uphold the Iboats humor in the future.
Hey 18rabbit, that one would definiately reduce the amount of foam needed to "float my boat" :D :D

I use a plastic keychain shaped like a nun buoy. White with a red, cone-shaped plastic cap. The cap comes off and the drain plug fits in there nicely. Makes it almost impossible to forget. I've seen them at sporting goods stores and I think they're fairly common.

I picked-up a plastic drain plug from Wally World, and the inner-most point actually has a hole for a chain. It's probably designed more for smaller runabouts, so that the plug can be attached to a chain that stays in the boat, but I have a small clip on my keychain that holds the plug rather nicely.

Re: Floating Keychain

You could always take a floating lure and remove the hooks. That would be kind of different.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll keep my eye open next time I'm at W-M. I was thinking of attaching some sticky magnetic tape on my standard floating foam key chain but not sure how long it would stay on and it would probably be pretty ugly as well...

lakelivin, Get one of those quick disconnect key rings from wally world or the parts stores and attach your plug to that.

My plug is just a solid brass screw-in plug, so don't see how that would help. Same for 18rabbit's idea. Although that buoy would float whatever size magnet I wanted to attach to it, along with a couple of keys...

Re: Floating Keychain

Cute story about free floaters -- years back a company next to our display at the Miami boat show was giving away floating key chains. Those simple plastic cone shaped deals everyone had with their name on it. Pop the lid off and you could put your registration or whatever in there.

A guy showed up one day to complain about the free key chain. He explained that he put his key on it and sure enough he dropped it. Unfortunately it sank.

The guy in the booth was very understanding and apologized -- must have been cracked, lid wasnt on tight etc. He offered the guy another one but really didnt know what else to say. After all it was a freebie. The customer explained that it wasnt the key he was worried about -- he had a spare. He was upset about the 8 quarters he had in the floater. He never did realize thats the reason it sank.
