Flooding near charlotte nc.

Tonights news is that many boats were sunk when the water level in one large near by lake went up over 6 feet. Peoples boats which were tied to piers were pulled below the water as the water level rose. People are mad that they received no warning of this flooding and water rise. Another report is that because of the flooding that hundreds of snakes took refuge in trees and poss a danger to people near by....This is a rare event here..What a way to start the boating season. My boat sits high and dry parked in my yard so Im lucky.

Duke energy did what needed done to save the levies. One of the troubles of man made lakes

Maybe I don't understand, but an area under flood warnings isn't a warning to residents?

I did not see all of the news reports. I did see several home owners saying they were given no warning that the lake would rise that high.The areas in the news with flooded homes was below the Mountain Island lake dam. The damage is done so I guess there is nothing to do now but suffer the loss. here ispicture of the Mountain island dam

They have only themselves to blame Duke Power Lakes Message 5 Day History - Duke Energy All the lake levels on the Catawba and Yadkin river basins are updated daily. I'm on the Yadkin and it is updated via a 800 number twice daily and online hourly. Part of boating is monitoring the weather.

I lived 17 years within 4 miles of the portion of the river that flooded (I now live 5 miles from High Rock). It's inconceivable to me there wasn't enough warning, it had been raining for 3 freakin days with flood watches/warnings issued! And, yeah, when water levels get high, snakes get higher.

Anyone on Lakes Norman or Wiley who lost their boat probably shouldn't own one there. Norman draws down 10 or so feet every winter (not counting droughts), and rises in the spring. The more rain, the quicker it rises and the higher it gets. As of day before yesterday, there was one sluice gate open, none were overflowing spontaneously, that lake still had some capacity. Folks who live on a lake need to monitor their stuff, particularly on the river below Mt Island dam ...

Thank you for the information.I feel for those who lost boats but they cant blame anyone but themselves. The homeowners just have to deal with it because they couldn't move to higher ground.

Didn't see anything about loss of life, or water rescues, or any 'emergency' stuff going on. I feel for those people, too, particularly those who didn't try to blame Duke Energy and NWS. There's pretty good reason for insurance in a flood plain, even when a mortgage company isn't involved. When there's as much as 7" of rain in the Catawba River watershed, the creek is surely gonna rise every time. Fair warning ... :cold:

I feel bad for the people that had boat damage but people need to stop thinking thats its the other persons responsibility to inform/protect them from themselves.

Yes, but it's kind of like hurricane warnings in Florida. Some heed, some decide to ride it out.

They knew they were going to get flooded, just didn't think it would be that deep. Folks who live in flood plains have experience with being flooded and feel they are better able than the authorities to assess the threat. And the authorities are not always able to accurately predict the final levels.

Example: In 2008, the Cedar River in Iowa was well above flood stage and clearly headed for major flooding. The city of Cedar Rapids was in full flood protection mode, sandbagging etc. and residents in the flood plain were moving stuff from the basement to the first floor (or in some cases the 2nd) all based on experience of the last big flood - The Great Flood of 1993. The highest river crest in recorded history was 20 feet and even the GF of 93 only got to 19.27. On May 12, 2008, the Cedar River crested at 31.12 feet.

I have seen several local reports that people were told they could monitor the water level updates and conditions by going to the DUKE POWER website..The complaint was they didnt have a computer and were new to the area..and learned this after the fact..I heard or saw no alerts on tv so maybe the people just had no way to find out it happened so fast..
