Re: flooding

Well you guys were right. I had a bad fuel pump. My mechanic found that. I grew frustrated fighting the electricial issues i had and dealing with some other problems at home. I just blew it and didnt check that. I have had several problem with this engine over the last year and a half. Seems to run well with the ears. Wont be happy untill i get a few trips on it. thanks Joe

fuel pump questions

fuel pump questions

Seems like i have never been totally able to get the bugs out. Had engine running well but not perfect. Had some dirt in carbs. Cleaned and better but more dirt again. Now after fighting all these problems on here my boat sat for winter. Started up the other day and had problmes. Fuel leaking out of fuel pump hole on back of pump. Engine whould back fire some times when slowed down. Fuel pump was not getting enough fuel to engine. Took out pump and noticed the plastic check valvue came out fuel line to carbs! This happend before and was reparied twice by boat mechanic! My question is to anyone, are these pumps that hard to fix? I have 1988 80hp merc and the pump has the oil line to it, and a line to the cylinder. I am waiting for a new rebuild kit to try myself but just wondering if these things are normally that touchy or what? Should i just buy a new pump and forget about the rebuild kits? Thanks joe

I rebuilt the fuel pump on my motor for the first time last year and I found it very easy. You just need to disassemble the pump, replace the gaskets and valve parts provided in the rebuild kit, and then put it all back together. A parts diagram of the fuel pump is very helpful so that you know exactly where all the parts go. Also, the Mercury rebuild kit contains instructions. The valve parts are a bit small and delicate, so you need to be patient when handling them. Be sure to use Mercury's special tie straps for re-connecting the fuel hoses to avoid leaks. Don't use the regular kind of tie straps that you might find at an auto parts store or similar source.

Re: flooding

Yes i bought the rebuild kit from Merc and rebuilt pump. Seems to have the problem solved but wont know for sure untill i get some time to test on water. Is it just me or are the fuel pumps very cheaply made. Those silly plastic retainers that hold the check valves in look like a bad idea to me. I wasnt totally happy the way one went in. Are those avaliable anyplace with out having to buy the whole rebuild kit again? Thanks joe

I don't know what the other boat manufacturers use or what other designs are possible, but I figure that the Mercury engineers considered their options and decided on the best retainer design. One has to install them correctly, of course, or else they might pop out at some time in the future. I don't know if the retainers can be purchased separately.
