Flooding...?

I had my friend start my boat up for me, while I put on the trolling motor. While he got the engine started I guess the engine flushers (ears) fell off, so the boat was just taking in air. For a little while, then once I realized it was off like 30 seconds later, I jumped in the boat and put it in neuteral and turned it off. Then I tried to start it again once I put the "ears" back on, and it wouldnt turn over...but I think I pumped it the gas bulb, a few too many times. And my friend was pumping the bulb while he was turning the key, is that bad? Also I could smell alot of gas, more than normal.

And, how do I mount a trolling motor when the boat doesnt extend out enough.

Do you mean it is turning over, but wont start?
Or its not turning over at all?

Yah is turning over but it wont start, correct.

It's a 35hp evinrude.

Pull the spark plugs and see if the cylinders are full of fuel,spin it over and test for spark while they are out. Impeller is shot now most likely...bummer.

Would that be the reason I smell too much gas?

It might not have even been 30 seconds, My gut wants to think it was flooded.

How hard is an impeller to install?

Impeller is fairly easy. Do you have a manual? If not it will pay for itself a million times over. Check ebay or outboardbooks.com for a factory reprint. That , along with this forum and a few basic tools, and you will be up and running in no time.

No Manual, but I have tools and access to the forum, unfortunatley I had my friends meet me on saturday at 7am at the boat ramp. I am going to try it tommorow with the ears. If it doesnt work...Im gonna be pissed. Then fall back on the forum.

You have to copy and paste it without the " " into a new browser window. Highlight everything with your mouse except the " ", hit ctrl c, then open a new window, clear the address screen, then hit ctrl v to paste.

An impeller has nothing to do with flooding the engine with gas. If you ran it for 1/2 a minute with no water, then you need to replace the impeller. If you don't, you may overheat the motor in which case flooding will be the least of your concerns. Flooding occurs when too much gas is pushed into the engine to fire. That could be a sticky carb float or a bad diaphram in the fuel pump causing gass to spray into the pulse hole.

I think so too HT,like the carb rebuild video.It explained 100 times better than reading the manual.It made it look simple and it really was.
I need to be out there putting my carbs back on,its near 70 degrees today! I'm just too lazy to pull the covers off the back...
