Floor Leveler Question

I'm not sure many people will have the answer I'm looking for, but here goes.

I ripped the old nasty carpet, wall covering and healiner out of my boat, and am left with the epoxied plywood. I will be hitting this with a combination of wire wheel and flap wheel to remove any and all signs of glue, adhesive or left over material. I should be left with just epoxied wood. My questions comes in with regards to the sruface I will have. Although it levels off alright after it gets hit with the flap/wire wheels it is still "wavy" or "bumpy" and not perfectly smooth. I do know the carpet should lay down over and hide this, but knowing I have it to this point, I want to put a coat of something down and level it as best I can.

I found some floor leveling products at the local HD and Lowes which peak my interest. Number one, for the fact that it will withstand abuse. Number two for the fact that it shouldn't see a ton of water, as it will be below decks, and the boat should be water tight. Number three, it's local and easy to get. This is a big one for me, as I hate sitting and waiting for products to arrive. I like being able to make a quick stop and have what I need. Working with weekday nights, doesn't give me all the time in the world and any time saving is huge.

So what do you guys think? Has anyone used a product like this? Should I not even bother where the carpet will go? Should I only use it where the laminate type flooring will be (this needs to be 100% smooth BTW)? Is there a different product I should look into?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Floor Leveler Question

Skim with bondo and apply a poly sealer to it after sanding it flat.
Bondo is NOT waterproof. Worked for me when I put teak in my galley.

Re: Floor Leveler Question

I would be afraid that with even slight flexing of the floor from walking on it and being under way it might crack....I really have no idea though just seems like it might.

I would think that the superior fix would be to cut out the floor and replace with new wood but thats alot of work and not sure how much you love your boat or how long you want to keep it.

throw some carpet over it and use it...springs almost here .

If it comes from a do it yourself or builder supply store, it belongs in a house, not a boat.

what that expanding hard as rock foam stuff they use to assemble boat halves..... don't know what it's called but they squirt it in place and use it to bed the fiberglass parts together

I am going to go out on a limb and guess that you have decided that after grinding down about 90% of the cabin, it's good enough for the new carpet.

So, am I right?;)
