Re: Floor paint texture

I don't recall where I grabbed this idea from, but other than sand in paint this is probably the best idea I have seen:

Merton (from Mertons.com) had a great idea for gelcoating the floor with a no-skid texture. Put down 1 coat smooth. Tape off an area that you want textured. Mix up some gelcoat with cabasol to a ketchup consistency. Roll on to taped off area. You will end up with an intense orange peel effect. He had a sample he did and it looks like what I want. I don't like carpet in boats...they always end up moldy and smelly.

Re: Floor paint texture

I used to do non skid flooring for warehouses. I would get the paint you normally use to paint the boat ( or get floor paint if thats what you want to use) then put on a coat of floor paint.tape off the area you DONT want to make non skid ( the only thing showing should be the area you WANT to make non skid) Now
Then you can use some CLEAN sand.
there are two ways of doing that.
1 sprinkle sand from a old sifter quickly so you get a light dusting. This is if youre looking for a soft kind of non skid for bare feet ( my recommendation)
2. saturate the area. let the paint dry then brush off the loose sand ( this will be a lot rougher)
now paint over the sand but move the taped off area a little further out so the paint completely overlaps the sand.
What I do is tape off a area with 1/4 inch tape in the shape i need. then a 1 inch wide tape strip goes along the outside of the 1/4 inch tape. then I mask off the other area. Now when you peel off the 1/4 inch tape strip youre left with a area you can overlap the paint and sand this way you dont have a small sand line showing.
