Re: floor questions

Good question, and there is a ton of advice on the subject as you search the forum. Most anybody here that has undergone a resto project has delt with the "deck". Fiberglass is a common method of strengthening your deck and helping with waterproofing. You'll need to decide if you are going to put all weather carpet in, or create a non-slip surface you can wash down with a hose. There's floatation to consider under the deck, and a few other items you'll come across.

Again, search the forum for deck replacement (or floor replacement ) and you'll see a ton of great advice. This is the one area on my project where I spent a ton of time and thought. This isn't an area to "get through", it's an area to "get right" the first time.

Have fun and post pics.

Re: floor questions

If the floor is soft, then chances are extremely good that there is rot there underneath that you may not necessarily be able to see. I am quite new here myself, and have really only just started my first restoration project, but there is one thing I have learned: in a boat, wood rot starts at the bottom and works it's way up. And it wood has been exposed to water, it will rot. The only question is how badly?

You can drill some holes in various areas to better evaluate the condition of the wood. Do a forum search on 'core sample'. Essentially, it comes down to this light coloured dry shavings from a drill bit == good wood, dark or wet shavings == rot....
