You might get better results on your searches by using "epoxy".

Re: Floor reapir question.

It might not be that simple. You need to check your transom and stringers for rot if your deck is that bad. Also, you should of posted this in the resto section.

If you don't check the transom and stringers your asking for trouble.

You will look a lot more boat savvy if you don't refer to the sole as a "floor".

Re: Floor reapir question.

Sorry. here is my boat information
it is a 1989 spectrum aluminum boat, the only wood part is the sole (floor) I am going with something cheap and fast. My plan is to remove the old 1/2 playwood sole and replace it with a 3/4 inch playwood from Homedepot. Since it is not a marine plywood from what I have read so far is that I can use eproxy to cover the whole plywood and make it water resistant. I know it is not going to last, I am more then happy if it can last for more then 5 years. My only problem right now it that I have no idea what eproxy to apply to the plywood.

3/4 will raise everything above the deck 1/4" and you'll find yourself doing a lot for trimming and refiting. Stay with the 1/2" it'll be fine. I'm not sold on the need for epoxy but if you want to do it then it doesn't hurt. I just used 2 coats of 1 part polyurethane and then covered it in marine vinyl using exterior flooring glue. That's what the manufacturers did then and still do today. Look at it this way, your boat is 22 years old and your just now having to replace the decks. I'd say they lasted about as long as you could expect.

I used to be able to understand birdgod's posts. Something tells me he's tappin' on a virtual keyboard of some sort now....... :p:p:p

Check out any of the Starcraft restorations. Your tinnie should be assembled similarly.

I just love smart alecks.

Since you're aware of your limitations with the wood, just go ahead and use regular plywood, but make sure it's exterior grade--not standard grade.

Instead of using a smelly epoxy, I suggest getting a gallon of elastomeric roof coating like they use on mobile homes and RV roofs. Paint it on both sides and the edges of the plywood. It looks like white paint when applied, but it's very flexible and waterproof. And, you can get it at any building supply, including Lowes and Home Depot.

Epoxy isn't smelly (least not near as bad as polyester) an please don't use roof coating on your boat deck....

Sorry Bamaman1, this is just not a good product to seal a boat deck.

What about a deck water prooofing agent like a thompson's water seal or something? Some of them are guaranteed for like 10 years... any opinions on that?

Well - considering I use that crap on my wood fence and deck every 3-4 years, I seriously doubt it would be a good option for a boat.

10yrs.....they do say that - but it isn't reality!

To the OP.....just use some "eproxy" - or if you wanna get real crazy - use some epoxy. Buy the cheap stuff at Home Depot (paint department) you can get a gallon with hardner for about $30.....it should get done what you are wanting to get done.

You should also look into putting rhino-liner on the deck (floor - sole, or whatever else you wanna call it) Atleast it will have a finished look when you are done vs raw "expoxy" over plywood.

Re: Floor reapir question.

Ok .. You can use just epoxy to coat if you like .. or you can 1.5 oz mat and poly it.

For epoxy I only use West System brand ( Its local..I can put in on the account..and I know how it works ). Expensive though.

There are other 2 part epoxies Im SURE you can use .. Others might chime in on what Brand they use.

As far as Elastomeric .. When I was in the construction biz we never used just elastomeric. We used ( as I best recall ) a Mastic with a membrane ( similar to finish cloth ) and then elastomeric for the top coating.

Another thing I recall is that elastomeric should be used on well drained surfaces ( I could be wrong ).

Dont use it. .. dont use water seal .. Use Epoxy or Poly with 1.5 oz Mat only. ( when I mean dont..I mean I dont suggest it )

I like this plan. And cheap too.

System Three makes a good general purpose epoxy. Its easy to use, mixes 2 to 1 and will fit 90% of applications. It also remains fairly flexible and is relatively inexpensive at Jamestown Distributors.
