Floor Repair

I am now to the floor stage of my project. There are cracks (2 hair line 2 foot long) in the floor where it seems a little soft between the stringers. It is only the floor which seem a bit thin. There is not any wood below in my boat (69 15' MFG) only in the transom which has been replaced and behind the dash. What would be the best way to repair? Plywood, mat and glass? The floor is so thin you can feel every stringer and they are solid. Any suggestions? :p

How do you know there is no wood below the floor?

The 69 MFG Niagara's old catalog specifies this fact plus I know a few people that have owned them and verified this. There is only wood in the transom and behind the dash for the steering and gauges.

Re: Floor Repair

Floor is made of fiberglass about 3/8" thick. Just seems thin not solid enough. Miniumum of flex between the stringers.

Re: Floor Repair

Actually today I found a 3/16" x 4'x 8' sheet of fiberglass at Home Depot. I think I will glass this in after I cut it to fit or perhaps use the epoxy I have left to laminate it to the existing and then thicken some epoxy for around the edges. Problem solved! I hope. NO WOOD.

If you can get it to bond, the fiberglass sheet should help. I would definately use epoxy, it shouldn't go anywhere...

Re: Floor Repair

you better use thicken epoxy for the entire job... thin laminatin' epoxy always has to be thicken somewhat before using as a bondin' glue...

left thin,,, it won't bond nuthin' to nuthin'... unless it's a perfect tite large surface area bond surface..

Re: Floor Repair

interesting idea, however I don't know how much
strength a 3/16" piece of fibreglass will add to
the floor or how long it will take before it too
cracks... only time will tell I guess, but keep
in mind there is a reason it cracked in the first
place.
good luck,
M.Y.
