I am getting ready to begin replaceing my follor in my 18ft cc. I would like to use PT ply for the floor but have a question? Will Skid no more or Durabak stick to pt lumber? I currently have skid no more on the boat and love it.....Would like to use it again but am afaid that it will not stick to the PT ply wood. Boat has a T-top so it will see the elements because I cant cover it. Any thoughts? Thanks

Re: Floor replacement question?

Is your boat a tinny or a glass boat? If it is a glass boat, you have to fully sheath the wood anyway. You have to make sure the PT wood is thoroughly dry for the glass to stick. Once everything is glassed in, your skid-no-more will work just fine.

If you are replacing floor panels in a tinny, you will still want to coat those floor panels in epoxy to fully protect them. Then you should be able to clean and scuff the surface, and the skid-no-more should stick. Good luck...

It will be in a tinny......SHould i just use regular ply wood and coat it in epoxy? Is that cheaper than PT lumber? PT ply will not work without coating it in epoxy? I have read a ton of posts but everyone seems to have a different view on it...Thanks for the help.....

Sir Catchalot,

Like Jason said PT is very wet when you purchase it, generally resin will not bond well to it and also will not penetrate as well.

Even after drying pt with "check" pretty badly.

IMHO, It is less expensive to use regular exterior or fir and encase it in glass/resin.

Peace.

Ed.

Re: Floor replacement question?

What type of epoxy should I use for this? How much will a typical 18ft cc need? Thanks for the help....

Sir,

Many brands to choose from I use 1:1 almost exclusively now, much easier to measure and mix. I purchase mine from Fiberglass Coatings inc. http://www.fgci.com , I have found I use (including waste) about 2qt every 8' by 38".

Peace.

Ed.

Re: Floor replacement question?

CCA treated ply will actually dry and let resin stick the same as non treated ply. On aluminum boats you bolt the pt down and cover with whatever you want to.

I have two boats with cca pt ply. One an aluminum pontoon with pt floor and carpet glued on top. It's 9 yrs old this month. I can't see the top but the bare (no paint, no coating, no nothing) underside shows zero checking or delaminating. At this rate it should go another 9 without problems. This boat also has caulking to make a gasket between the alum frames and ply (they get splashed when in use).

The other is a 17' fiberglass outboard kept on a trailer. I replaced stringers, floors and transom with well dried pt ply and covered with epoxy (cheap 2:1 generic type). The floor was only glassed to the hull around the edges and the center part was coated with resin only...then painted. This boat gets beat up pretty bad in choppy water and everything is holding tight. It's been 4-5 yrs now and no delaminating or checking.

Maybe 15 yrs ago I helped my uncle replace the transom wood in his 1960s 15' aluminum Starcraft with 50hp outboard. We used cheap pt ply and just bolted it to the hull like the original...no paint, no resin, no coating. He bought the boat new and still has it. I asked him about the pt ply a couple years ago and it was still ok.

Later on in this thread you state where your boat is a "tinny" which I assume means aluminum. The old chemicals in PT were recently 'outlawed' and the new ones are highly corrosive to aluminum. The fastenings used in the new stuff have to be of the right sort or they will corrode away also. Sam

Re: Floor replacement question?

I'll start by pointing out that I'm no expert - but I just removed the original floors from my '83 Lund and found that they were simply plywood covered with carpet - untreated and unsealed. They're soft in a few places, but all in all they held up for more than 20 years, spending at least the last 10 years (probably the entire life of the boat but I don't know for sure )stored outdoors with only a cheap boat cover to keep the elements out.

Would fully encapsulated plywood hold up longer? No doubt about it if truly fully encapsulated. The way I see it pulling up the floor, at least in an aluminum boat where they're only held down with rivets or screws, every 20 years is probably necessary at least to replace the carpet if nothing else. At 18', I only need three 4' x 8' sheets of plywood to replace all of the wood that's there so it's really not that big a deal.

The other thing to consider is that unless the plywood is completely encapsulated you may be doing more harm than good. If water finds it's way in the encapsulation will only hold it there longer expediting the decaying process. With this in mind you have to consider how you're going to fasten the floor to the hull and how you're going to attach accessories like seats, battery and fuel tank hold downs etc. Any breach in the encapsulation is a problem.

If you're truly serious about maximizing the life of your floors look for alternative materials, like aluminum sheet or some of the new composite materials that are becoming available. The way I see it, do it the easy way knowing you'll be back doing it again in 20 years or go all out and forget about it for good. In my case the boat isn't worth the expense of "permanent" flooring.

A glass boat is a different matter.

My two cents anyway.

IS all new PT wood corrosive to aluminum? What chemicals should I stay away from? I doubt that the lumber yards will know which PT plywood they have contains these chemicals......I guess I should rule out all use of PT wood if this is the case...correct?

A builder friend of mine told me to look into Advantech plywood? Has anyone used this? Is it suitable for marine applications? He said it was epoxy impregnated and the choice for all builders at this time.

yes, the EPA outlawed chromated copper arsenate a couple years ago, as a result they bumped up the copper content and ALL pressure treated wood produced in the last 2 years is highly corrosive.
