Floor soft

I have a 1997 Wellcraft center console, the floor behind the console is getting a little soft. This seems to be a common problem of these boats. Water got in thru where the T-top mounts to the floor. I want to try to cut & remove the skin off the area, remove bad wood & replace. Then glue skin back on. The boat does not have carpet, has a large fishbox in the floor, & a bait tank. Also is a self-bailing cockpit. I also want to remove the over-sized bait tank, & install a leaning post with a more useful sized or portable bait tank. My question is: is there a method or trick to remove the fiberglass "skin" from the floor ? The skin will be about a 6'x10' that will be cut in 4 pieces. There are lines in the texture on the floor that will be my cutting guides & will make repair less noticeable. One of the lines goes just in front of the fish box. Thanks for your help, by the way, I do have a lot of fiberglass experience, a little floor work, but not this much & without carpet.

Re: Floor soft

all you can do is open it up and see what is there, you may get lucky or unlucky.

Re: Floor soft

use a circ saw, set to 1/4 inch depth.....make a small cut, see if the blade went all the way thru. adjust blade depth accordingly.

cut acess hole as desired.
