Re: Florida Living!

Great post. I always think it must be a bummer to not live in a snowy climate or have snow on Christmas. I am in MN where we can generally claim the coldest temp on any given day of the year but wouldn't trade it in for anything. I love snow and snowmobiling so much so I would love to move to the UP of Michigan just to get more. My thought is that at a certain age my fondness for cold and snow will do a 180. My folks hit that point this year, sold their house and moved to Hawaii. 61 Minnesota winters finally did them in. Every summer and winter season change I pull the boat or snowmobiles out and get to start anew. Of course the bummer is that most of year there is no snow but plenty of cold or it's too cold to boat even though there is no ice on the lakes.

Re: Florida Living!

I live in Florida and I don?t like anymore. Last year I tried to homestead, that is produce all my food from the land. It was a dismal failure. The soil is very poor and won?t hold water and nutrients. What little crops I had left were devoured by fierce insects and fungus, what survived was fried by soil temperatures approaching 120F. My chickens overheated and were gasping for breath. If I was raising a hog that would have been heat stressed as well. The nail in the coffin was when I tried to grow pumpkins for Halloween. In order to have them in October you have to plant in July. The temperature in July Aug Sept and Oct was in the upper nineties every day. The plants tried to grow but failed to set fruit because of heat stress.
My despair was quickly cured by a trip to the Midwest. I was shocked at the culture there. I saw non-irrigated corn as far as I could see. There was no garbage, everyone was overly friendly, I never had to slam on the brakes in traffic. There was no one walking down the street with their pants falling off.
In two years I?m moving! I will miss alligator hunting and salt water though.

uh oh.
On the behalf of myself and my fellow midwesterners, we shall not be held responsible if you moved and decided the midwest is not for you. :D Just kidding.
Heck the fields here are not only non irrigated but they have drainage pipes underneath to get rid of the excess water. You never have to worry about plants won't grow May-October. Just don't live in the city because you will still have to deal with the traffic and sagging pants.

I live in Canada and have lived in Florida in the past. I could not put up with the dog days heat so I moved back north. I would think the best of both world would perhaps be to live in one of the New England states in summer and Fla in the wintertime ... or would it be Virginia all year round ??

Just don't come to Peoria, okay? We have pl;enty of falling pants on the streets, the corn is now rotting in the field due to all the rain, so are the pumpkins, and everyone drives so slow, you'll never make it anywhere on time! :)

Whatever floats your boat, all of that snow and ice sure won't do it for mine. ;)

Of those three, in 3 years of living in Florida, I only ever saw the alligators. Lots of them, mind you, but they were not a problem for me. They don't bother you in the heat of the day, when you are out boating.

No gators live around my area... too high and dry.

Panthers... maybe! (Bears for sure.)

Cobras... don't live in this part of the world, but I have killed 3 rattlers on my place. Non-poisonous varieties I leave alone, but they still give me the heebie-jeebies. :D

A quick highjack... I've owed you these 2 pix of the 1963 Fairlane that I used to own... forgot all about 'em. Sorry about that.

Re: Florida Living!

We have a supply of white powder that is anti-Floridian dust......... when the people come up from Florida looking for white powder this is what we give them........ and people in FL sell this stuff for money?? Well I must be a rich Northerner with all I have.

We love Tourists here and as long as we don't exceed the "bag limit" during Tourist season .....no one cares.

Florida Highest elevation 345 feet above sea level LOL :p

told you that this post was a troll!! ;)

Re: Florida Living!

I have a love hate relationship with Florida. I spent a lot of time there as a kid staying with my grandparents in Kissimmee.

My wife and I flew down to Fort Myer?s last Spring and spent some time looking around the Ft. Myers, Venice and Marco Island area to see if it was of any interest to us. We liked Marco Island other than it?s "end of the world" feeling. We came to the agreement that other than the bugs, old age, poverty and the tourist we thought it a great place to live.

Having said that, we?ve not written the area off just yet. The area is a ways behind San Diego in the weather and vitality category but we both have extended family down there so who knows.

"The old people live in Sarasota, their parents live in Venice."

But Ft. Meyers has the oldest average age of any city in FL. At least it did in 1995.

It's not so bad up North. You can still see bikinis now and then during the winter. :D

While I live in Jacksonville Fla for approx one year, I drove 15 miles to the Jacksonville beach every evening just to watch the ocean and smell the salted air ... only to find a few other northerners doing the same thing ... always wondered where the locals were ...

We had already been there all day and were headed back to the homestead...!

As an air force brat I remember some of that Northern clime...2 winters in Maine and that was it. Japan was fun! Most of our time was spent here in Florida, though.

54 yrs here and I think we have found our place to die....

Old Czeck farming community north of Tampa. My kids are nearby. Got a few acres, had room to build a big garage, the fishing is great all year round. I have yet to get eaten up with the bugs, no alligators, the panthers are in the everglades and are protected. Just a few wild black bears over on the other side of the big hwy.

The neighbors are friendly and meet at the community center regularly. Just some of the street names...hviedzoslav...don't roll off the tongue.

Did I say we go fishing whenever we want? What else could a man want??..:)

Re: Florida Living!

I NEED my seasons, and like the changes in between. Gotta love Md, Moutnains, the best body of water to boat on in the world(The Mighty Chesapeake), many rivers and the Atlantic ocean.

I used to own 2 rental properties in Cocoa Beach and would come down 2 times a year. Nice place to visit, but not a place to live for me.

Why do people make threads like this, or respond to every snow, or winterization thread. Are Floridians THAT insecure????
