I would like to hear anybodys opinions on florocarbon fishing line....good or bad.

I am thinking on switching over to it for leader material.

I have heard that some don't like it for the main line because it does not streach and they jerk the hooks out of the fish's mouth.

However if i use it only for my leaders i will retain the steach in the monofillament line for some play.

Has anyone tried this?

Derwood.

Re: Florocarbon

I have been sold on the kevlar lines for years. I had tried many differant brands and now I guess my fishing style has adapted to them.

I spoiled myself and have not tried the florocarbon. I just replace what I use with basically the same thing, Kevlar.

Bob

Re: Florocarbon

me too... i've never used florocarbon ,yet. i've been mostly ' superlines' that have NOOOO stretch..!! a good harley chain has more give....!!! an have no problem with rippin' off a fish-face,at all...just no need to hoss the rod ..
i LOVE no stretch.. you can feel EVERYTHIN'... don't reccommend them tho for super-clear water... there not invisable at all..

but no stretch floro-line in clear water..
thats diffinately hidden-dragon style for sure...

Re: Florocarbon

Yeah so what if the fish can see the line I usually catch the dumb ones anyway :D

Another unusual plus of the kevlar line I use is the ability to actually pull the boat to a snag  I have lost far less lures since using it.

Hmmmm Harley chain could make a strong leader!

Bob ;)

Re: Florocarbon

i have read that florocarbon line (i would think a line desined to be clear...not one of the colored ones as i am sure they have them) when put under water turns invisible...they said that a shrimp, that would normaly go around a fishing line, bumped right into it.

I take advertising for what it is and am skeptical...but alot of the fishing guides down here have been making sabiki rigs out of it.

some are useing it for leaders now...also for it's abrasion resistance and knot strength.

Just though i would see what my freinds though of it.

Thanks guys.

Derwood.

Gorilla Braid and Spider Wire are both Kevlar. I can tell you that they are best in bait casting reels. Open face reels with the stuff just leads to nightmares.

Bob

yeah, i like spider wire... didn't know it was kevlar...

i don't like 'fireline' it shreads to much & separates..
but if you like ' superlines ' ... flat-out ,handsdown ,you gotta try 'POWER LINE' !!... it's sorta kinda hard to find ( think cabelas has it ) , but it good stuff .. you'll immedeately see the differance... it's the poop.... don't use nothin' else an keep it on for TWO SEASONS.

My son just turned me on to Power Line. Sure is thin! Got it at WalMart. I agree with you Crabby, I seems to be an improvement. Spiderwire frays badly on snags. Saws thru the pads nice, though, horseing a big bass out on a shiner. Used to lose a lot of 'em with mono.

Re: Florocarbon

Modern day florou is as good as mono with some less stretch. It is almost invisible when under water and a little harder to see than clear mono of the same size above. I am sure it has caused me to catch fish while others around me have remained fishless in clear water. In dirty dingy water or fishing for fish that are less leader shy I still use mone because of cost. It is the only leader material in my fly vest and I use the Berkley vanish. I also have 2 reels spooled up with it one 2# line and the other 6# which i use in clear water and it works just fine. I guess it might be because the ultralight rod takes up for the lack in stretch.

Re: Florocarbon

when I troll using downriggers I use 20lb florocarbon and a 12ft 6lb florocarbon leader. Since switching to the stuff I have noticed an increase in not the numbers of fish caught but the fact that I'm catching bigger ones. I guess the big ones are a little more timid and the clear line gets them every time.

I use Berkley's " Vanish " fluorocarbon line and I love it. My Waleye catch is much better. I was an old fireline diehard untill the fireline started to wear a little groove into my rod eyes.

Re: Florocarbon

i tried it out for steelhead fishing. hooked a 12 pounder w/ 15 lb p-line leader and it just snapped right off as i was landing the fish it semms that flouro is a bit stiff and brittle. switched back to mono and have not had a problem
