Fluctuating reading on Tach

I noticed today that my Tach reading if fluctuating between 5000 and 7000 at WOT. No change in WOT speed, still running 32 - 35mpg. I am wondering what would cause this. 85HP 1987 Force.

I've had this problem before and it was due to a loose wire at the back of the tach.

Best I ever got was 2.3 to 2,5
Tap the screen and it should settle down.
WD-40 on the contacts.

yeah its a 1987 17' bayliner capri. moves right along with a 17 pitch prop. I found the sorce of the water In my tank. I have a bad sending unit gasket. and my bilge pump anto switch is broke.
