Fluid in float...

So I took the top carb off my 84 Mercury 115 and noticed there is fluid in the float. I read this was somewhat of a common issue in older carbs. I have read there is no real way to get that fluid out easily. Problem is I can't seem to find a float to replace it. Anyone have a replacement part # or idea on how to clear it? I havent even opened the others yet so who knows how those will be.

Yes, they are; the floats in all 3 carbs are the same. Haven't personally seen a lot of failures in the newer-style plastic float, but things do happen! The hollow-chamber style of that float would make it more prone to getting a leak and filling with fuel, whereas the older foam-style-plastic floats just tended to soak up the fuel and get "waterlogged".

If you're going thru the carbs, it's always a good idea to check the floats, set the float level and make sure the needles and seats seal like they're supposed to, and flow as they should. New needles & seats are still available, BTW, if needed.

FYI that same float style has been used since the 50's, ain't that a kick!

Something that I didn't know, I checked and the hollow-style float has been superceded by an even newer-style float, that looks like foam again. Maybe the hollow floats were springing more leaks than we knew.

That being the case, it might not be a bad idea to order (3) new floats, to avoid problems in the future.

Cheers.......ed

p.s. the Sierra Marine aftermarket floats (P/N 18-7208 are a lot cheaper!!) And lots of times you can order them thru NAPA.
