What is the correct way to check the level of fluid on an Alpha 1 sterndrive and then how do you add fluid and what is the best fluid to use?

The drive unit should be down and the cavitation plate level if it's a older unit without a dipstick or reservoir the fluid should be level with the top hole

Straight from Mercurymarine's website http://www.mercurymarine.com/serviceandwarranty/mercruiserfaqs/productmodification.php

Should I use Premium Blend or High Performance gear lube in my sterndrive?
High Performance gear lube is required in all Bravo and Alpha I Generation II sterndrives. It is recommended for use in all older sterndrives as well. Premium Blend and High Performance gear lube should never be mixed. Be sure to drain the unit completely if switching from one type of lube to the other.

Go there and read, good stuff.

thanks for the info. I had a hard time turning the boat upside down to add the fluid from the bottom up on the stern drive. Haha. I am sure they make a tool and where is the hole at to make sure it is full? Or maybe I should have a pro boat person do iit???????

Ya buy the pump at West Marine for like $10.....
It screws into the lower port front of the drive......
On the port side, almost at the top of the drive is a screw marked 'vent'......
Ya pump the gear oil in the bottom until it comes out of the vent hole & put the top screw in......
Then quickly remove the pump fitting & replace the lower screw.....
Don't forget to replace the gasket washers with new ones.....:)
The drive takes about 1 liter of gear oil, so you will need to buy two quarts.....;)

Thanks Admirial, your advice is greatly appreciated. Can I ask a stupid question and as you know I have asked some before, but you have to crawl before you can walk. If not for this forum my I would be lost. Why do you put fluids in from bottom to top? Just curious.

That way air doesn't get trapped in - you will push all the air out as you fill it from the bottom.

Since you are topping up, make sure the tube from the pump to the fitting is purged of air before connecting to the lower fill hole, else, you'll pump in one big bubble.
