Re: Flush mount Rod holders !

I put two flush-mount rod holders on both sides of the gunwale at the stern on my '96 Targa 17 SC. Aluminum is pretty thick on my boat's gunwale (I'll gauge it and post thickness...bought the boat used and don't know exactly what the thickness is).

My intention was to use these for mini-down riggers, and they seem to hold up fine to that stress. I figured, "strong enough for cleats, strong enough for mini-downriggers." However, I wish I just stuck with the usual side-mount rod holders, I've got 10 more of those mounted to the inside of the gunwale, and they work great. You have to drill some big holes for the flush mounts (watch out for cables!), they have little "caps" that will probably need occassional replacement, and I bet for 99.9% of the applications a side-mounted rod holder will work fine.

Also, uninformed helpers mistake the caps on the flushmounts as "Gas Caps!".

I use them on my Q3 S/F along with mini riggers striper and eye fishing and they work great. And do watch out for the cables and wires when drilling holes (hole saw worked good).good luck

Did you install the flush mount rod holders? I just bought a Targa 185 sport and want to do the same thing. Any reply would be great.

Thanks in advance

No I was actually talking to the guy with the Targa. Our boats are pretty much the same hull. I was looking at the scotty flush mounts with the scew on nut on the bottom.

I have a 1995 Pro Deep V-17 I installed the Scotty flush mounts, they work great,I use them for trolling and slip bobbering for crappies.I love them,I installed 1 beside the helm for when I am driving and trolling, keep them more to the inside of the gunwale,so the taper of the hull does'nt make you have to cut the tube of the mount,as I did.
