I am hoping someone might be able to help me. I purchased my first boat which has a 1967 Johson 1967 motor. I have been trying to find out whether you can use rabbit ear flushers on these models after being in salt water. I purchased the round type but it does not fit the motor as the intake slot is to close to the cavitation plate. I just purchased a rectangular flushing device, will this suit? and do I have to cover up any more intake holes as I dont want to use a drum every time I need to flush it.

If memory serves correctly, the intake is on the leading edge of the exhaust snout behind the propeller. There were gadgets for those, but they didn't work very well. The intkes on the sides are actually relief vents for overflow if I'm not mistaken.

Willy is correct in that the water intake is on the forward edge of the exhaust outlet. Tempo used to make a flushing adapter that clampes over it. They worked OK, but were not as easy to apply as muffs.

The plate and screen on the port side of the gearcase just above the anti-caviation plate is an auxillary intake to admit water while running in reverse. Water actually flows OUT of that plate while running in forward and the prop wash is feeding the main intake. Some have drilled and tapped that plate for a hose fitting, but make sure you don't make it so too much water is allowed to escape while running in the lake. Also, obviously, water hose-fed into that plate just tends to run out the main intake, unless you feed in a lot of water.

thanks heaps Willy and F R. Well I guess i wont be trying to fit the muffs over the plate and screen.

If I run it in a container of drum, how deep or high up the motor does it have to be? a friend said I have to run it well above the plate and screen as the water pump is located higher and needs to have pressure to suck it up.

The water pump is in the bulge where the lower unit bolts onto the midsection (the lower bulge if it's a long shaft). That should be submerged.
