There is a tube the allow water into the lower unit when running the stock impeller, but the gear oil is what cools the drive mostly and the boat moving through the water would cause water to be forced into the drive i think... But a lot of people don't do the sea strainer the mount a lift pump to the engine and pull from the OD with the impeller removed. The lake is a large heat sink.

Lots of i thinks in there. I just don't believe the water helps cool the drive all that much.

The mercruiser drive showers come to mind. But I dont know what circumstances have to occur for the showers to be necessary.

It's my understanding that you need a MC OD and run on plane for long periods of time. The KC doesn't need one, the oil capacity is quite large.

Generally operating the drive at excess HP ratings...... and at VERY high RPM is what makes them run hot.

When you operate any stock drive at rated HP and RPM, just being in the water is enough to keep them from getting too hot. Also, using synthetic oil will reduce temps somewhat....

Excellent explaination, and I'm safe with my setup. Thanks Rick!

I'll get some Flying A Synthetic :D

Um.....I am not sure you're going to be very successful finding any Flying-A products! My Dad worked for Associated Oil Company many many years ago when they were bought by Getty Oil. Then they were bought by Texaco and then became Chevron-Texaco in the 80's I think. I have always liked the Flying-A logo.....

But you CAN get other synthetics.... I use one of the synthetic gear oils in my Bravo..... (but I'll never tell!!:p)
