I want to take a look at my ignition system that is under my flywheel. The motor is a 1979 clinton 7.5 hp. How do I get the flywheel off?

So I got the flywheel nut off the top and have two holes on the top of the flywheel but the holes are not threaded. Would a puller work on this?

The best thing to do would be to drill and tap. If you could find a photo
with the flywheel off, you could drill without hitting points, coils, condenser.
If not I would be very carefull with the drill as it breaks thru.

Best of luck

They are pretty easy to get off with a flywheel knocker tool. You can buy one at a lawn mower shop, or you can make your own for less than $1. Obtain a 7/16 bolt and two nuts. The shorter the bolt the better. Run one nut up on the bolt, then put the second one on only about two turns. Then run the first one down and jam it together with the second one. You now have made a special tool.

To use it, thread it onto the shaft hand tight. Raise up on the flywheel (pry gently with a screwdriver), then give a few whacks on the knocker with a hammer. Put the sledgehammer away--it only takes about a 12oz hammer. It is the shock that does it, not the bash.

DO NOT merely thread the original nut on the shaft and beat on it with a hammer. Lots of people do that and lots of people wreck the shaft threads too. The knocker won't damage it.

That's a great tool idea M_R. I'll have to try it.

I'm one of the nut bashers you speak of....but I do use great care and have not damaged a crankshaft to date.

Other options include tapping the holes in the flywheel as mentioned and using a steering wheel puller to apply some upward force. Then use the 12 oz hammer on the puller center screw to "knock" the flywheel loose.

I have also used a large 3 jaw puller too hook on the outer rim of the flywheel to apply the same upward force before tapping the puller center screw to "knock" the flywheel loose. Some folks frown on this as you could damage or distort the flywheel if you apply excessive force.

Whatever method you chose you can generally remove any flywheel in a few minutes by applying a moderate upward force and two or three sharp taps on the end of a crankshaft being careful not to damage the threads.
