Hey I am new to the forum and have a couple of questions concerning an old johnson 33 hp. super seahorse rxe-15 which a 1967 model. I obtained boat, motor, and trailer from my mother-in-law and it had been sitting for about 15 years and I can't get the fly wheel to budge. After soaking the pistons in mystery oil for about 2 weeks I tried again with no success however a friend told me to take a wooden dow and hammer to the pistons which I did and got 1/2 inch or more movement to the pistons but the fly wheel is still stuck. I then took off the lower unit to see if perhaps it was a gear problem. The gears work fine and though there was what appeared to be crystalized fuel mix and carbon in the exhaust housing there was no rust and the cylinder walls look good too so my first question is could a coil be siezing the wheel or any Ideals and second my shift lever seems stiff and I can't figure out how to get exhaust housing off to clean it? grateful for your help. Motor was supposedly running when parked.

... and what kind of puller are you using to remove the flywheel?

... and how could a coil possibly be seizing anything?

BTW, you need one of these to remove the flywheel and used with Gr 8 bolts and washers:

Procedure is here:

Re: Fly wheel stuck

id remove the head (head gaskets are cheap) and have a good look at the exposed cylinder walls, even post back with pics.

Re: Fly wheel stuck

Thanks for the response. To answer your questions I haven't tried as yet to remove the fly wheel so I'll sure use a puller when I do and as to a coil hindering the fly Wheel when I was at the library this morning one of the old manuals I read in the trouble shooting section gave coil heal hitting fly wheel as a possible cause and I read it on another forum though the the book wasn't very detailed . I suppose another thought is that the same trash thats impeding the shifter could be gumming up the bearings but as you can tell I am a novice to this. Any other suggestions are apprieciated.

Re: Fly wheel stuck

its "probably" not a flywheel issue, remove the head, inspect the cyl walls for corrosion damage.

Re: Fly wheel stuck

The cylinder walls look good on top of the pistons and having moved the pistons 1/2 inch or so I see no rust at all where the rings would have been in contact with the walls. The cylinder walls are fairly shiny and I can't feel any irregularities , pitting , and so on

Re: Fly wheel stuck

So you're saying the flywheel won't turn? Have you tried removing the pull starter and using a wrench on the flywheel nut? You say the pistons move up and down a half an inch but the flywheel doesn't turn? That's not a good sign.

Re: Fly wheel stuck

let me explain. I'm sure the fly wheel moved when I tapped the piston with a wooden dow and judging from what I see one piston moved down about half an inch and the other up of course and yes I've tried a wrench and breaker with slight pressure on the nut but after the half inch or so movement the fly wheel still just moves 1/16 to 1/8 inch rocking back and forth which it has done from the start and I assume this is just the play in the linkage. Any ideas

Re: Fly wheel stuck

Also let me add that I only moved pistons this one time with dowel rod and thought that with oil on cylinder walls this would allow me to move it a bit with wrench on fly wheel nut but it seems to just have re-stuck is this common , should I keep trying and eventually it will free up , your thoughts are apprieciated. You know they say ignorance is bliss and I think I must be the happiest man alive.

Re: Fly wheel stuck

Try spraying a 50/50 mixture of acetone and automatic transmission fluid down in the cylinders and let sit overnight; see if you get anymore movement and then soak them again; this may take a week or more to loosen things up. good luck.

Re: Fly wheel stuck

Since I've moved the pistons a little one side won't hold fluid any more as it is far enough down to allow it to seep. The piston in the upper position still holds it. Do you still think the pistons are froze even though I see no rust on the walls at all.

Re: Fly wheel stuck

If the pistons move a little, there may be something else binding. I'd remove the flywheel and see what happens. Could be a loose coil blocking flywheel movement.

Re: Fly wheel stuck

Yeah thats what I'm hoping could be the problem because I'm running out of the easier options and hopefully not headed for a tear down of the motor to look at the rods, bearings, etc...I'm going to get a puller either borrowed or bought and remove the fly wheel soon as I get time. I'll post the results when I do.

WOE IS ME!!! WOE IS ME!!! Finally got flywheel off after about three hours time. Put nut back on and jiggled it to and fro and ......STUCK I SAY,IT'S STUCK DO YOU HEAR, IT'S STUCK AND WOE IS ME!!!! Maybe I'll hire ten or so of the local day laborers to get behind my boat and just paddle kick me around the bay. Sure people will laugh but I'm thick skinned.Oh well looks like we might be taking a trip to crank caseville.I'm about out of options

Re: Fly wheel stuck

I got the fly wheel to turn freely at about 11.30 last night. tapped them lightly with hicory dowel moving one to another getting slight movement each time adding a bit of penetrate as I went. After about 30 mins. of this I could turn it by hand. there was very minimal rust at exhaus port level on lower cylinder.cylinder walls look good and I don't know if I am going to have a look at the bearings or not.I am going to put the heads back on and do a compression check. Does anyone know what the compression should be and what the torque specs are on the head bolts and fly wheel nut ? I am going to replace the coils etc.. before putting the fly wheel back on if I have good compression.Total soak time for pistons 3 1/2 weeks

Re: Fly wheel stuck

60 psi on both cyls, and the motor should run. but you need that on both. if you get ..lets say 80 psi on one .....and 60 psi on the other, thats not good, they have to be within 10% of each other. i forget the torque specs, but they , and the proper sequence can be found by a search in the forum. good luck!

Re: Fly wheel stuck

Great thanks for the help I'll look through the forum for the specs on the bolts. Going to pick up my gaskets tomorrow. Hoping and praying for good results with the compression test. Thanks again

Re: Fly wheel stuck

I'd be looking more for 100+psi on both cylinders. My 35hp (basically the same motor) has 120 and 124. Flywheel nut should be torqued to 100-105ft.lbs.
