1968, 9.5 hp Evinrud Outboard. Removed the fly wheel nut, easily. Place fly wheel puller in place but can not pull fly wheel with a great deal of pressure. Is there something holding the fly wheel down, or do I just need to pull harder?
I used the three holes adjacent to the shaft on the fly wheel.

Re: Fly Wheel

Thanks "thought 101". I tried tapping rather hard on the top of the puller. It didn't work.
Would heating the fly wheel be any help?

Re: Fly Wheel

Try penetrating oil and lots of whacks.
Try having someone hold up motor by the flywheel
when you hit it.Keep the nut on loosely so you dont drop the motor.

Re: Fly Wheel

Just had to pull the flywheel on my '83 235 to replace a "bad" stator... At any rate, keep tightening the puller, until you're fearful that another pull, and the puller bolts will pop or pull the threads out of the flywheel...

THEN...give it a good whack or two directly on top of and squarely on the head/end of the main, or center bolt of the puller... On mine, the marina mechanic which I was assisting (didn't happen to remember to buy and take one of those handy pullers with me) doing mine (while in the middle of the lake on vacation) finally had to tow me to the marina, and resort to using an air wrench to get enough load on the puller to make the flywheel pop...

NOW comes the REALLY important part!!!!! MAKE SURE, AND DOUBLE-DOUBLE CHECK TO MAKE SURE... THAT YOU PROPERLY LINE UP THE KEYWAY WITH THE FLYWHEEL AND THE CRANKSHAFT WHEN YOU RE-ASSEMBLE !!!! WHEN THEY "SPIN" and thye will if not lined up... SPUN FLYWHEELS, AND KEYWAYS ARE NO FUN TO FIX...

Re: Fly Wheel

Thanks people for the help on the fly wheel. I will keep trying. Most of all, I just wanted to be absolutely certain that after I took the fly wheel nut off, there wasn't something else holding the fly wheel on. My shop manual says, "no", but the wheel is stuck so tight it seems as if something else is holding it on. Sounds like it is not an uncommon problem.
