Can someone give me directions on pulling the flywheel on a 1988 90hp Mercury outboard, serial number 0B302485? I dont want to go out and spend a ton of money on tools after I will drop $200 on a new stator. Will it be necessary for me to buy the puller etc....? I just want to get a feel for what I am getting myself into. There has to be some homemade contraption someone came up with other than buying the tools?

Thank you,

Rick

You can make your own as I did. I was pissed when I found one later on ebay for $20 !!!

Re: Flywheel and Stator removal

I rented a puller from Orielly Auto Parts. My flywheel had three tapped holes for the puller bolts. (1994 Mercury) Worked great. Those merc pullers on e-bay are few and far between for under $60.

Good Luck

A harmonic balancer pulley and grade 8 bolts and washers of 5/16" can work.

Re: Flywheel and Stator removal

Dear Forum, I dont have any tapped bolt holes on top of my flywheel to anchor to. Looking at your picture schematic, what do I need to make that contraption? Please give me details of what I am looking at. I have access to a welder etc... Thanks

Also, I believe I have a keyway where the flywheel will fit back onto. Will I have to reset the timing once I replace the stator or can I avoid having to do this?

Re: Flywheel and Stator removal

there should be eigth 5/16" bolts that ring the flywheel nut. Remove three of them to bolt to the puller. There should be a "W" shaped groove in the flywheel and chankshaft. That serves as a keyway. The timing will not change, if you do not mess up the trigger linkage.

Re: Flywheel and Stator removal

Chris, my stator is stamped 261 9007-C2 and it does not have any bolts around the flywheel nut, nothing at all. I will have to purchase the special puller like the one schematic posted a picture of above. I do not see any other way to get this flywheel off to get to the stator mounting bolts. I got the flywheel nut off relatively easy with an electric impact tool. I could not hold the flywheel in place trying to loosen the nut with a breaker bar and socket. Electric impact worked perfectly.
