Flywheel cover off?

Is there a danger to damage anything by running the boat for a test drive with the flywheel cover removed? My 1983 Foir Winns Marquise 170 with merc 3.0 140 and alpha 1 drive has been getting water in the oil and sone leakage. Some oil has collected there previously, so I want to be able to see it easily, but don't want to cause damage. Thoughts?

I assume you are referring to the tin cover, is so, you can run without it.
