Re: flywheel hitting stator

Chances are, there is something under the flywheel that is out of adjustment and the flywheel is rubbing on it. The only way you'll be able to tell, is to remove the flywheel and take a look.

It looks as if the armature plate is loose or worn, remove flywheel as suggested and inspect.

Re: flywheel hitting stator

removing the flywheel is the plan, if I can get the thing off.
She is tight, tight,tight.

Left it soaking in penetrating oil overnight, going to try again today.

DO NOT BANG ON YOUR FLYWHEEL. you are using a fly wheel puller aren't you?

Re: flywheel hitting stator

got the flywheel removed, a little puzzled at the moment as to what to do

It has the one piece style stator so I can't move it inwards. Also it doesn't really have a backing ring like I was hoping....was thinking about the hammer and punch trick but not seeing how I am going to make this work on this one

prepare your self for a cringe

I'm thinking about grinding the stator back.

Re: flywheel hitting stator

ok so I refrained from grinding.

Think a new stator plate will cure this motor?

Re: flywheel hitting stator

You can probably look inside your flywheel and see if something has been rubbing on it. If so, look on your mag plate. I don't know about this motor, but on older motors, this issue happens when a coil is adjusted to close to the flywheel magnets and they rub each time they make a revolution.

What is the year and model number of your motor here? Then I could get a parts breakdown and get an idea of what is going on.

It's an 82 50 HP J50BELCNR

It's looking like a lot of the slop is because of the upper bearing.

I can slide it up and down a little, anyone know if you can replace these without breaking down the powerhead?

Re: flywheel hitting stator

For one thing, with the type of retaining setup used with that armature plate and stator assembly, it is impossible for the stator itself to move towards the flywheel.

The problem above is normally caused by a failed main bearing (top or bottom, or both) that allows the crankshaft and flywheel to actually flex.

Watch the flywheel in that video ever so closely and you'll see that it is flexing ever so slightly, and ever so slightly is too much.

I've encountered this problem with larger horsepower engines, even six cylinder models that of course have dual center main bearings, and the bottom main bearing had failed but the top main bearing was fine. The resonance/vibration that the bottom main bearing caused resulted in a flexing of the flywheel. Why this takes place in a crankshaft with dual center main bearings, I have no idea.... but it happens.

Bottom line..... Grab that flywheel and do your damnest to rock it (sideways, and up on one side, down on the other). Let us know what you find.

Re: flywheel hitting stator

Joe-
You hit this one right on the head with the hammer.

I replaced the stator plate with a brand new one and it took away 80% of the slop.

It's much, much better. However it still hits after I start to throttle up. Low speed is fine now. About half throttle sometimes it starts tingin a little sometime more than others.
Except now we have a new symptom. It's killing the motor. After about 10 secs of tingin she dies now.

If you grab the flywheel I can feel just that little bit of slop. I have an 89' in the barn to compare it to and guess what, the other one doesn't have any.

I'm left with a decision now. Is it worth it to tear down and put an upper main bearing in it and see if that cures it or she would just give the girl a proper funeral.

I could also maybe grind the stator back a little to get the clearance it needs. Never ground on a stator for clearance though, a little iffy about doing that.

I have seen several 80s model 50 hp motors around here for under 1K, sometimes as low as $500, in good running condition.
