I have read sevaeral posts on removing flywheels and have done so a few times on my motor by just removing the 8 bolts because until now that was all I needed to do for what I needed it pulled for. I have don that again but this time realized that I also needed to pull the center hub of the flywheel as well to get under that to remove the upper end cap that I need to replace.

My QUESTION

Any GOOD advice on removing it without the flywheel puller- It is on there good and doesn't wnt to budge- I have gone o the auto parts store and used a harmonic puller w no luck. I want to order the puller but really want to get the job done now rather wait a week for it in the mail for a 2 minute job, although It will probably come down to ordering it(for a one time use I'd rather not since I am a poor college student).

THANKS EVERYONE!!!

An automotive harmonic balancer puller with minimum of Grade 8 puller bolts should pull that flywheel hub right off of there! Don't use a jaw-type puller.

I'll have to ask the obvious question, you got the flywheel nut loosened, ?Yes?

If the hub is reluctant to come off, get a propane or MAPP torch and apply heat to the outside of the hub, all the way around. If you have an air impact wrench, the 'rattling' motion of an impact on the puller will help jar the hub loose.

If it still won't come off, heat it up again and spray some PB Blaster penetrating oil into the middle of the hub and let it soak for at least a few hours, a day is better (this is with the puller still under tension). Then heat it up again and see what happens.

Last thing, and this is "proceed at your own risk, don't try at home!" stuff, grab hold of the puller with a Gloved hand, take a minimum of 2-1/2 lb to max 5-lb mallet and while pulling upwards, give the puller a stout Rap. Now, I'm not saying beat the thing senseless, this is a calculated blow which hopefully will be enough to jar the hub off.

WARNING: you MUST have the flywheel nut on when you do this, only make sure the washer is removed and the nut is backed off so it's approx flush with the end of the crankshaft.

The reason for doing this is, when that hub finally lets loose, and you're sitting there yarfing away at the puller with all your might, with no nut on the end of the flywheel the hub and puller are gonna fly up right into your Teeth! Probably a good idea to throw on a set of safety glasses while you're at it.

I had a Johnson 120 Looper that defied all attempts to get the flywheel off. I finally had to let it sit for a week with the puller on it, every other day or so heating it up, hitting it with the impact wrench, and PB Blasting it. Finally it came loose with the help of more heat and aforementioned 5 lb hammer.

That's about the worst big one I've had; then there's those Johnrude Twins that like to "weld' the flywheel to the crank. Get out the Nukie Grinder and a Snickers bar, it's gonna be a while!!!

Anyhow, if that doesn't get that hub pulled, I'd recommend some Plastique, or perhaps a low-yield thermonuclear device! ;)

Well- I ended up buyin some PB and sprayed it real good a few times and let it soak for a day with the harmonic puller tight. Still no luck, so I sprayed it down again and left it for about 3 more days. Came back and got the puller to tighten down a little more and two taps later she popped right off.
Thanks for the help.
