The small post would be the solenoid power that pulls (or pushes) the bendix gear into the flywheel. The large post is the main power lug. The starter will be grounded to the block, so just touch a jumper wire to the solenoid post. It will "click" outward and not spin.
Normally with power to the main post as well the gear would advance on the flywheel and be spinning, but you will not be powering the big lug initially, so you may have to slightly rotate the crankshaft to allow it to mesh with the ring gear.

i dont think i have a slave, but that is what i planned on doing so i could see everything. the only reason i didnt do it last time was the starter was at the shop and didnt have it while the motor was out. how do you make the gear come out and not spin? all i have is 2 posts on the starter one big and one small. which one do i put the power on???
