i dont think i have a slave, but that is what i planned on doing so i could see everything. the only reason i didnt do it last time was the starter was at the shop and didnt have it while the motor was out. how do you make the gear come out and not spin? all i have is 2 posts on the starter one big and one small. which one do i put the power on???

The small post would be the solenoid power that pulls (or pushes) the bendix gear into the flywheel. The large post is the main power lug. The starter will be grounded to the block, so just touch a jumper wire to the solenoid post. It will "click" outward and not spin.

Normally with power to the main post as well the gear would advance on the flywheel and be spinning, but you will not be powering the big lug initially, so you may have to slightly rotate the crankshaft to allow it to mesh with the ring gear.

no i know it is not locked up, we had to hold it from spinning while tighting the coupler bolts and i also spun it around a few times before the starter screwed up the teeth

i have the motor ready to come out, and the motor mounts loose, just waiting on friday so i can take it to myshop and use the forklift to pull it. we will install the ring gear and then the starter out of the boat, so i can watch to see what is going on. the past week i have just been disgusted everytime i either look at my boat or see a boat heading to the river, i know it will be done in due time, just mad at mine but it will be back soon.

One thing you can do to maybe get through the season is carry a breaker bar with a 5/8 socket. When you hit that bad spot on the flywheel just bar it over from the front crankshaft bolt a few teeth to get past it. BTW this is an easy way to verify a bad flywheel. If you can move it a few teeth and it works there you go.

When you pull the engine be aware there is a "stack" of a spring and washers on the rear mounts. They MUST GO BACK EXACTLY AS THEY CAME OUT. Or you will not get the coupler aligned. If you have to force the drive on you will have to pull the engine again to replace the expensive coupler.

ANY parts of the outdrive pulled, drive or just lower, must be done in forward gear. That is the way the shift stuff lines up.

thanks, i pulled the motor alittle over a week ago, and now i have learned al the little secrets. i can prob have the motor out and back in with the new wheel in about an hour or two

I hear you and I share in your frustration. I missed a couple of trips myself going through my ring gear/starter/block "issue". I got so frustrated waiting on the welding shop, and an alignment tool to come in, that I never got (another story!) I almost just stuck her back together just to get out there... GLAD I DID NOT DO THAT! Because, when I rented an alignment tool locally I found that the alignment changed even though I never touched the motor mounts. When you re-install the flywheel coupler you will see that is NOT a precision fit. Bottom line- don't even think about skipping this step!

Also tape the nuts in the bottom of the transom mount assy. into the housing with some electrical tape. This will help them to stay put when you are putting the rear motor mount bolts back in. Also make sure the leather bushings look good back there!

Just trying to help you keep the faith that taking the time to do it right will save you in the long run! It saved me from possibly ruining my out drive!

well when i pulled it out the first time, the sleeves in the bushings for he rear motor mounts had seezed to the bolts, and we ried everything to get them to break loose, ended up ripping the rubber in half on both bushing. so i bought a new bellhousing/motor mount and it had the new bushings and also bought new bolts, washers, spacers, double lock washers, fiber wshers, and alum nuts. and that was only 2 weeksago, so everything should come apart very easily, i mean i never even got the damn thing started. and i have an alignment tool, my dad runs a cnc machine, and i got the specs for the tool, i think from don and he built one out of aluminum. the onlything holding me up now is i have no means to lift the motor here at my house so i have to take it to my shop and it is full right now. so as soon as it clears up, the motor will be out , the ring gear will be on, and i will try the starter while out of the boat so i can watch this thing and figure it out.

so, just a check up, yesterday i pulled the motor again to put a new ring gear on the flywheel. now i have had the motor spin over a couple times, but now, while i pulled it out, i took the plugs out and tried to spin it over by hand with the flywheel, nothing, put a wrench on it, nothing, and finally put a 4ft breaker bar and could not move the motor, also the starter bolts were bent from where the starter was trying to spin the motor, now i dont understand how 3 weeks ago, the last time i messed with it, it spun over maybe 10 times and never started and now it froze up tight. any ideas????

Jeez that sucks, pull the heads and check if the juggs are rusted up maybe ?
Don't sound good, sounds like "motor time".

I would agree... Time to start taking it apart to find out what's wrong. Sounds to me like its much more than just the starter and flywheel.

You may need to find a new block anyway, depending on the condition of yours. Pull the intake and heads, and check the cylinder walls. You may be able to turn it over then. The cylinders might be rusted or scored beyond repair.

When was the last time you had the engine running?
