Flywheel Key

1953 Evinrude Fastwin 15.....the flywheel key keeps breaking.....anyone had a similar problem? what could be the cause??? Stumped!

The most common causes are improper key, and improper torque.

Do not even bother trying to use a hardware store key, they will break. Get an OEM key from your dealer, and torque it to 45 ft/lbs

Also, the taper of both the crank and inner flywheel mating surface need to be clean! Wipe off with acetone before installing.

YES, the proper torque is very important.

As mentioned above, you may need to "lap" in the tapers because broken keys often damage the taper surface.
