Hello all! I recently bought a 2000 johnson 25 hp. Model number j25rlsse. It only has pull start option. Would like to have both electric and pull start. I want to weld the tabs from the original flywheel onto a toothed flywheel but I dont even know what material it really is. Does anybody know what kind of steel it is? Thanks

Modifying flywheels must be one of the most dangerous things you can do. I used to know a man that had one explode in his face. Resulted in skull and brain damage.

Flywheels are darn expensive for what they are, surely the integrated magnets accounts for skyrocketing the final price, check at a scrap yard second, third hand ones it's the best option.

One would assume cast steel... but I see lots of comments about cracking. Pretty tuff to crack cast steel.

Either way, pretty sure nothing good can come from rotating a #25 unbalanced flywheel at 5000 rpm

There may be a way to fit an older steel ring gear onto these new cast iron style flywheels.----Will get you the end result you seek.
