Re: flywheel puller

I use a harmonic balancer puller on my 83 150. Never a problem. Available at your local auto parts store.

Re: flywheel puller

I don't recommend a harmonic balance puller because it pulls from the sides. This can break your flywheel. I bought the special puller from mercury to pull the flywheel off my 150 merc. It was money well spent. Cost less than a new flywheel. I'm an automotive technican and believe in the right tool for job. The mercury tool threads in the center of the flywheel and pulls from the center against the crankshaft. Works great. I only used it once, but I had to have it to do the job. Good luck with your repair.

Re: flywheel puller

I think you are referring to a pully puller. My harmonic puller uses 3 bolts and attaches to the flywheel in the center. It works the same way as Merc's $77.50 puller except they are only $15-20. I do agree, never try to pull it from the edges.

i drill a piece of 1/2"steel plate and use a couple of high-tensile bolts and a 'forcing screw'.work a treat.very similar to a harmonic balance puller.

Re: flywheel puller

The mercury factory tool has two small torington bearings in the end that fits against the crank. This keeps the crankshaft from being damaged. My '83 150hp v6 didn't have the holes you need to use a harmonic balancer puller. Wish it did, I have one of those.

Re: flywheel puller

I recommend purchasing the repair manual for your engine. It has great photos and much needed information, like torque specs.
