Flywheel question also

When I pulled my flywheel off a couple of months age, I discovered some A-hole had crossthreaded the flywheel nut. I took to boat shop and mechanic was able to get nut back on, and I thought all is well with this fix. However, I took flywheel off last night in order to re-check trigger wires, fixed (soldered) wires now the threads on the crank are buggered up and the flywheel nut won't restart. The nut came off good and smooth. Taps this size and thread are hard to come by. Shoud I just re-tap to standard thread? Or, try to find a tap this size (mission impossible?) The end threads on the crank are terriable, this ain't good. I realize what happens if these threads get to screwed up, so to speak.

Can't afford to take to machine shop.

Why me? Why can't things be simple?

That nut is used on many of the flywheels/crankshafts for different motors up until the early 1990's. I don't know the size but I would look into getting a new nut. Might try here.

It is not a tap you need but a DIE. Try going online to McMaster-Carr or Grainger. The diameter is 3/4 inch fine thread--I don't remember what, just count 1/2 inch and double it. Try to find a thread chasing die and clean them up. The tool won't be cheap and you may be better paying a machine shop.

Worst case: The new nut that you are also going to buy will strip at the 96 foot pounds it is torqued to. Then you will need to try cutting new smaller diameter threads.

Have you tried a thread file to chase the start thread?

1. Do you have enough extra threads to file the bad starter threads off?
2. Your local auto store or shop might be able to order you a chaser or get one off their supply truck.
3. Last, a nut the correct size cut about 1/3rd the thickness (corner to diagonal corner) should work as a chaser, starting carefully.

Thanks guys I got it. Had to buy a twenty dollar tap. FYI the crank thread size on my 85' is 3/4X16. Broke the tap, but I now can get a nut on and off.

Yea my bad. I'm gettin old. I confuse easy foodfisher. I love that name by the way. Still trying to find misfire, used a magnifying glass and went over the trigger wires they looked good, except at the terminal ends. I replaced and solderd two of them, one of which fell off as soon as I lossened the screw. Maybe, just maybe....
