I called a local repair shop to see about obtaining a flywheel holding tool and a puller so I could install a charging kit on my '89 Johnson 15. He said they're not needed. His procedure to immobilize the flywheel is to place a screwdriver between the teeth and up against the powerhead. With the nut broken free, back it off a couple turns and proceed as follows; lay a large prybar on thermostat housing (fulcrum) and apply upward pressure on bottom of flywheel, with this pressure applied, strike crank with mallet. Rotate flywheel 45 degrees and repeat. Continue until flywheel is "walked" off crankshaft. He maintains that he never uses a puller and always does it this way. I'd prefer not to have to buy these tools, but this technique sounds risky. Am I right? If I must purchase these tools, is there a cheaper supplier than the local Johnny/Rude dealer? Pete

Hi Lowranger
I do not belive that is the OEM recomended method. You can purchess the suitable harmonic ballance puller kit from a tool store like harbour frieght, or an auto parts house. A cheep one might be $15. maybe more. Damage your crank shaft or flywheel and it will just about cost you your motor.

never hit the crank with a mallet. everytime you do that u are shocking the bearings and making unwanted end play. get a puller they are cheap.

I'd replace the bolts that come with the cheap harmonic balance puller with grade 8 bolts. It's a lot less trouble then trying to get a broke bolt outa the flywheel.

c/6
Hooty

If you want to get real cheap(or live out in the county) you can make one with a small piece of flat steel and some bolts.
