Flywheel removal 1967 Johnson 3hp

Hello there. Fall is approaching and I've decided to tune up my 3hp Johnson with the folding shaft. I have a decent steering wheel puller but what is the best method to prevent the flywheel from rotating so I can remove the center nut?

I don't think I want to wedge something against the prop (its directly connected to the crankshaft).

Thanks so much. I love this little motor. I doubt if it's ever been serviced but this past summer was trolling just a bit rough so want to dive into it so to speak.

Those flywheels do not use a "steering wheel puller", which uses jaws on the outside edges of the flywheel. That will warp or break the flywheel. They use the harmonic balancer type puller, which uses bolts that thread into the 3 holes in the flywheel. A strap wrench is the proper tool to hold the flywheel, but a belt or strap wound the right way around the flywheel also works. Wedging the prop will break the drive pin.

thanks, I should have emphasized that my steering wheel puller uses bolts instead of a claws that grab the outside. I was just concerned about restricting the flywheel and looks like I have my answer.

I use a nylon strap/ratchet wrapped a couple times around the perimeter of the flywheel and ratcheted tight on both sides of the motor. Holds fine.

dumb question, but is it advisable to remove the fuel tank before attaching a strap? This model has the metal fuel tank that basically surrounds the flywheel. Actually the flywheel is a bit recessed within the permieter of the tank making it a bit difficult to attach a strap. Just wondering what the consensus is.

Actually, you should be able to loosen the nut without a strap wrench on that little beastie. Using a socket on the nut and a ratchet you should be able to tap it loose fairly easily. Give the wrench handle a good rap with a block of wood and the nut will probably loosen right up. Works for me on most of those smaller Johnrudes...
