*Evinrude 1989 90hp VRO Crossflow 2 stroke*

Question, the manual makes it seem so easy to take the flywheel off as well as the nut at the top, it ain't easy and I am going on day 2 of using penatrating oil.
**** So, if I am reading this correct from the manual, I am to loosen the nut on top of the flywheel, then use a puller to pull off the flywheel?
**** Also, where can I get a tool to keep the flywheel from turning when I try to loosen the nut on the top?
**** Do note, that I do not have a impact wrench and I am using a large socket with a large handle.

Jimmy

Re: Flywheel removal and Nut.......

Jim, I have not worked on a motor of your size, but here is what worked for me. Thanks to SteelSpike of this board for helping me. Take a long box end wrench (Socket and ratchet will work but was harder to hold on straight. Put the wrench on the nut and hit the wrench a few times hard with a hammer. Seems unconventional, but I got the same advice from a bunch of different people and it wroked well for me. As for pulling the flywheel, I have heard that a harmonic balancer puller works great. You can get these at most auto parts stores. to hold the flywheel if needed, I have heard of using on of those strap ratchets. In my repair manual, they show the use of a wrnch that bolts on the top of the flywheel which has a handle to torque against. Good Luck

Hi Jmorrell588,
Scoop gives some good advice. As for holding the flywheel while trying to remove, or install the nut, I've always used a screwdriver ( large) wedged between the starter pinion and the flywheel teeth. That is when I didn't have an air impact.Hope this helps.

Highly recommend not using the screwdriver in the teeth method of holding the flywheel. It will break the teeth or send the driver(ie; sharp projectile) flying  I've had sucess wraping a stong pull rope around the flywheel and anchoring it to something unmoveable nearby.
Air impacter is the way to go...

If you are removing the heads you can do so and put a piece of wood in the cylinder then reinstall the head with a few bolts. This will stop the piston travel and allow you to loosen the bolt without the crank turning.

I have not worked on an engine that size before. I have an evinrude 3 horsepower 1964 engine and I have been told to go to a local tool rental store and ask for a "steering wheel" puller.
Hope this helps

--------------

Bikeman

Harmonic balancer puller (with the right size high strength machine screws and washers) is the way to go to pull flywheel.

The proper way to hold a flywheel is a piece called a flywheel turner (KD Tools makes one) available through NAPA dealers and speed shops. This will allow holding for nut removal AND tightening (torqueing). If you have access to an impact tool (air or electric), you won't need this tool.

Re: Flywheel removal and Nut.......

I recommend that you try to tow the boat or take the powerhead somewhere that can take the flywheel nut off with an air impact wrench. If you can't, go to an auto supply store or home depot and buy an impact wrench that you can strike with a hammer. They are about $20. Many of them come with an adapter that you can remove to reveal a one-half inch drive socket drive. Just put your socket on this, make sure it's set to loosen the nut, and strike hard.
To pull the flywheel, get a harmonic balancer puller at an auto supply store for about $15. You will need to buy some better bolts than those that come with the puller. The ones supplied are not strong enough. You can use the hammer-striking impact wrench to tighten the puller as much as possible. If the flywheel won't come loose, strike the center bolt of the puller with a hammer, hard. I hope this helps. I just went through the same problem.

Carl

I don't recommend striking the flywheel nut with a hammer impact driver OR stiking the harmonic balancer center bolt with a hammer either...good way to ruin your lower main bearing (or worse).

Re: Flywheel removal and Nut.......

Good points, Captain Slow Boat. I should not have said to strike it hard. The procedure I outlined is illustrated and described in the Mercury Sport Jet 90 service manual on page 2A-17. The manual says not to strike the screw too hard. The illustration shows a 1 pound hammer hitting the center bolt of the puller. So, if all else fails, this is probably a valid method.
