Greetings! Newbie here…please be gentle! (Mercury 40hp efi Bigfoot). I replaced my stator yesterday and when I started the engine it didn’t sound right. Almost like a sparkplug miss. The flywheel is keyed, so I didn’t think anything changed.

I read on here about another guy in same situation. He was told to remove plugs, hold pencil to top cylinder (#1) and rotate flywheel until TDC. Then replace flywheel.

appreciate any help with my issue.

Does the stator sits firmly on its base ? Check if each spark plug is firing OK ? Flywheels usually have a single slot position where the key locks into it...

Yikes! "hold pencil to top cylinder (#1) and rotate flywheel until TDC. Then replace flywheel." Finding TDC with a pencil has nothing to do with replacing a flywheel. Information's missing in a big way here.
So we're saying the engine sounds like it's "off", like it's misfiring?
What's your serial number? 3 or 4 cylinder?
If you think ignition, put a timing light on each cylinder. That's a definitive ignition component test, stator right down to the plug wire (with the exception of the spark plug).

Thank you, SeaRider for replying! Much appreciated!

YES, the stator was held by 3 Allen-headed small bolts. New stator when on the same way Same position. The flywheel IS keyed! So as a Newbie I’m lost If timing is needed.

Before well intended folks ask me more questions, I’d just like to know if the flywheel is in fact KEYED, is reseting the timing common practice or not? I’m not speaking of the oddball situation - once again, just everyday procedure.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!
