flywheel removal

95 Baja Blast with a Merc Sportjet 120 motor. how the hell does this flywheel come off?? i tried a puller with a lot of force with zero luck.... i tapped the center bolt and still nothing.... any tips? <br /><br />Can i heat it?

Tony, You using a block puller and utilizing threaded holes?I wouldn't use heat.Try impact wrench on puller bolt.Don't overdo it or it'll strip the threads in flywheel.Also, soak for a while with pentetrating oil before trying.

a 1/2" air impact wrench with a socket that matches your puller center bolt. I use a 5/8" socket for my puller.

Every Merc. flywheel I've ever pulled was a booger to get off. Tighten down the puller as tight as you can get it. Then you need to whack the puller bolt. I use a 3lb sledge and don't hit it too hard. Then tighten the bolt some more and hit it again. Keep doing this and your flywheel will come off without damaging any bearings. I don't recommend using anti-sieze in reassembly. The flywheel is the ground circuit for your entire ignition system. If you want to lube the crank-flywheel mating surfaces use dielectric grease.

It's recommended not to use any lubricant between the flywheel and crankshaft at all. In fact, it's a good idea to use valve lapping compound and lap the flywheel to the crankshaft and then wipe the flywheel and crankshaft clean before assembling. The only thing the key does is locate the flywheel on the crankshaft. Friction between the f/w and c/s is what keeps them aligned, not the key.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

Hooty is right. I have heard that anything that could lubricate the surfaces between the flywheel and crank will let the flywheel move too far down onto the crank and you wither will have the flywheel hitting things or more likely, never get it off again. If you use penatrating oil , make sure you totally degrease the crank before putting th flywheel back on. Of course, you have to get it off first. Good Luck
