I'm in the process of overhaulling my 1985 Johnson outboard
I'm having trouble removing the flywheel
I've got a hamonic puller on it and it won't break free
I've put heat to it , map gas, repeatedly
I've put a bar under the flywheel and rapped the top of the harmonic puller
I've soaked it in WD 40
Any Ideas?
11/25/03
I've tried the PB blaster oil and let it set over night,I tapped it with a 2pound hand sledge, I then used my 1/2" electric impact wrench, and then I put a pipe on a breaker bar and now my harmonic puller is just beinging to show stress cracks and still it isn't moving.

Re: flywheel removal

When these fellows say tap, they mean hard. Give the balancer shaft a good solid hit and then tighten your harmonic balancer screws. Then repeat.

Re: flywheel removal

wd 40 is not a penatrating oil. and be carful hitting the balancer to hard remember that every time you hit that you are shocking the bearings on the crank.heating with a torch is usless you will never get it hot enough with that kinda torch.i would leave pressure on the puller over night and get a good penatrating oil like PB BLASTER or somthing like that. remeber when you get it off to torque the nut and some anti-seize helps for removing it next time.

Re: flywheel removal

If you have the proper puller, an air impact wrench will shock even the most stubborn ones loose. Be carefull with heat, or a hammer."Impropper puller, or puller hold down bolts" can lead to disaster.
