Flywheel replacement for 150 Evinrude?

I have a 1989 Evinrude 150 XP that has a very bad spot (chewed up teeth) on the flywheel. Of course, if I attempt to start it when the flywheel is in this position, it grinds and damages the brass gear (not sure what it's called) on the starter. Just wondering if anyone can tell me where to find a good used flywheel or a decent price on a new one? Will probably go ahead and replace the small brass starter gear while I'm at it. Also, how difficult is it to remove a flywheel? Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Flywheel replacement for 150 Evinrude?

I had to replace mine last summer on an 88 Evinrude XP150 and it wasn't very difficult to do with a puller. Mine came off relatively easy, but i have heard that it can be difficult if stuck. As far as price on a new one, they are a fairly expensive item. Mine new was $500 something, so i started calling marine salvage yards looking for compatible ones. I didn't keep the numbers though, sorry i can't help out there. I found some just doing an internet search for used outboard parts. Just make sure the magnets on the inside of the flywheel are not broken or re-epoxied onto the flywheel (fairly common problem for the magnets to fly off on the 35 amp charging system) Hope this info helps. Good luck,<br />Steve

 $500?!?! That seems just a little ridiculous. Hopefully I can find a good used one! If not, I'll be rope-starting that beast!

I had a few worn spots on My 175hp--and a wire welder....

If You soak down an old towel with water/cover the engine below the flywheel & disconnect the battery...You can weld some teeth back on , just take your time & have a thin cut-off wheel on a die grinder to tune up the edges-----Viola! New Choppers !

The flywheels are NLA, and if someone has a new one, they are in the $500 range. If you have another damaged flywheel that has a good ring gear, you can also heat up the ring gear and slip the old one off and put on a newer one. Not all 35 amp crossflow flywheels are the same. Be sure you get exactly the same part number, as they are different depending on whether you have to packs or only one. Gary's may have a new one: 888-891-0101.
